Advice re: walking etiquette
Hi all
Its official I have the best staff puppy ever!
She's house trained and doing so so well bless her ..
My issue is out walking.
She is now 16 weeks and walks to heal (although still working on recall on her long lead when I let her have a bit of freedom).
My problem is when meeting other dog walkers.
If we get passed by a lone person/person on bike etc she looks but there's no interest. But when we meet another dog regardless of age/size/breed she pulls to go sniff and jumps up at the other owner etc. Which obviously I know is puppy/being friendly.
She's never been aggressive to anyone human/animal or otherwise since we got her so i'm not worried about aggression on her part. I just want her to be more calm as a: we don't know if the other dogs are friendly and b: thankfully the other owners have been pro staff but I don't want bad manners to be cause for an anti staff to have a go at me/Luna.
So far i've had her sat for a few passes until they come up to us but inevitably they stop for a chat and so Luna wants to meet her new friends, had Luna doing her thing whilst i've tried to distract her/lead her away (with her sill pulling in the opposite direction, or we've changed our route to avoid any contact
As always all advice gratefully received

Walking to heel!!!!! That's fantastic. Bacchus is 6 mths and still a puller. Have tried the red light/green light, stopping until leash goes slack, turning in the opposite direction etc. What's your secret please?? Having said that he is really good off-lead, recall, sit and wait then recall and is catching on to stopping at the kerb ( on -lead ) and waiting for the walk on command. He still gets excited to meet people and dogs and am reluctant to discourage this as I want him to be as well socialised as possible.
Sounds like Luna is a smart wee dog and she looks gorgeous.

Don't get me wrong she's not fool proof, but she's got the idea and that's good enough for now
She's never really pulled and we learnt sit and stay before walking, so she was ok at roads before we got out and about.
I had her walking to heel by showing her her fav treat, and then showing her me putting it in my hand in the pocket on her side, she just walked close to the treat and looking at me for when he would be allowed it then when we ot to a road etc if she sat she got it. Then id show her the next one and have it where she knew it was ...
She just seemed to 'get it'. I have been very lucky I think
Thank for the advice with walking. I'm probably expecting too much too soon but I thought early caught problems would mean early correction!?

Re: Advice re: walking etiquette
You could try having her Sit when a dog approaches you and try to get her to stay too. Maybe also try the Watch Me command as the dog walks past you, with this just get her to look at you and concentrate on you until the dog has gone past. A treat may help with this.

We use the treat distraction as well and it has worked great for us

The "watch me" command is ideal. I've grown to be able to tell when Logan is gonna cause a bit of fuss, so like you, I make him sit and wait until they pass. Try to get Luna to keep eye contact with you and reward her when she does.
Logan would run through a brick wall for a piece of ham so that is what I used to help him watch me. Find what Luna loves most and she will have no problem. Because she is so young this is the perfect time to teach her as it will save you a lot of hassle later on.

Watch me command with a treat works for us , but sometimes when she's off the lead it all becomes a bit too much for her and she has to go have a nosey lol
