Tommy hit by a car
Hello folks,
last night i had the misfortune to witness one of the worst things ever. Tommy, 15 weeks old, managed to slip his lead on his way home from our night walk. We were about 200 yards from our avenue but on the opposite side of a main road. Upon slipping the lead, Tommy bolted and headed for home, straight across the road and into the path of an oncoming car. I could do nothing but stand and watch. Tommy hit the car on the front bumper with quite a loud bang but he didn't yelp or cry, he just carried on running towards our house. I caught up with him at our front door where he was sat waiting for me. I took him inside and checked him out, touching him everywhere to check for injuries. He didn't cry or yelp at any stage. However, i did notice that his right eye looked a bit bloodshot and the eyelid looked a little bruised. I put an ice pack on it and stayed up through the night just to keep an eye on him. He woke this morning as though nothing had happened and ran round and played on his morning walk with 2 greyhounds.
He has been fine all day today but this evening his right eye looks as though it is weeping slightly, he appears to be producing a bit more "sleep" from the eye and blinking a little more with it. Other than this he is fine.
Could the bang on the head have caused this?
I know he is a very lucky puppy and he must've had a guardian angel last night.
Cheers, Mike

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Blimey, sounds literally inches from a different outcome.
No idea about the eye - I would doubt it would lead to additional weeping - but maybe be prepared for a bit of bruising over the coming days.
What are you going to walk him with now? Is it time for a harness?

Wow! I'm glad he seems okay, but I agree with asa-james. You should take him for a check-up, just to be on the safe side.

Oh how awful. I'm glad he is okay though, stafford are so robust. He maybe has a little concussion

Re: Tommy hit by a car
OMG he was so lucky! Sounds lime he has a black eye, but to be safe I'd have the vet give him a once over.

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Jeez I'm sorry you had to go through that. But at the same time glad it ended how it did.
My last dog jumped out of the car boot before I could get her lead on and was hit by a car and she got up and walked on too. They are incredibly tough animals. But, yea a check up will have everyones mind at rest. Most importantly yours.

I think from now on you should use a harness or a different collar that's a bit tighter, he's one lucky puppy! But like others said, take him to the vets for a check up just to make sure he's fine

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Cheers folks. I will take him to the vet on Monday for peace of mind.
I don't really want a harness as it will encourage him to pull. He's never done anything like that before, I can only assume the snow freaked him a little. He doesn't even pull, I have him walking to heel.
Forgot to mention that the spring in the clasp that attaches to the collar has broke; this is what enabled him to break free.
I just thank God that he is still with us!!!

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Oh how horrible for you and Tommy, thank heavens it wasn't a lot worse.
Ref his injury - see how he is on Monday, as Caryll says hopefully it is just a black eye, especially if he gets any swelling around it. You did the right thing in putting an ice pack on it.
Re slipping his lead - I've had the same thing with my slightly older pup. The traditional "thumb release" clip just was not strong enough for him, and could and did spring, especially when he shook himself. After loads of help on this site I got some carabiners (like mountaineers use) and providing I check every time we go out that the screw is fully engaged, I am finding that he hasn't slipped his lead since.
Do let us know how Tommy fares - ><

Oh Jason, I'm so sorry to hear this, how terrible for you. It's something in all our nightmares I guess, certainly mine.
If you believe in an after-life, may this poor dog greet you - eventually.

God that must have been terrifying so glad Tommy is OK, he was very lucky. Agree with everyone else, vet's just in case. Staffs are known for being able to hide their pain, afterall, so better to be safe than sorry.

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Dang, I hope he has a good checkup. I'd be freaking out. Marley tried to jump on the sofa today but her angle was off and she nursed her foot for a minute. I freaked over that. I would have had a heart attack if a car struck her..
Re: Tommy hit by a car
its a nightmare hope he is ok. They are pretty tough so hopefully no permanent damage done

hi, what a lucky doggy, deff got a guardian angel somewhere RE the harness, tyke use to slip the lead and pull like crazy on a collar and we decided to use a harness. Its the best thing we have had for him as i have total control over him and helped with walking. It did not encourage to pull or make his stronger in the chest. hope he has a good recovery and keep us updated if you visit the vets

Poor Tommy, it must have given you a real fright. I have noticed a few complaints about the PAH leads breaking I don't know if that was the kind you had?

Ouch, poor Tommy, he must have felt the car hit him, I would get him checked over by the vet anyway. He may have injuries you cannot see.

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Wow , sounds like poor little fella came out of that lucky. I prefer to walk ours on harnesses for such reasons, Tilly slipped out of her collar one morning when I walked her to the vets (she got there and realised where she was going and panicked) and the vet is on a really busy main road. Fortunately for me she didn't move or it could have been the end of her.
Staffy's have an incredibly high tolerance to pain so definitely have that check up on Monday just to make sure. My Tommy sends big boy ><

So sorry, and very distressing for you. This is one of my fears with Kenny. He pulls and yanks so much.

Re: Tommy hit by a car
Hello everyone,
Thanks for your concerns. We have been to the vets today and it appears that Tommy is indeed a very lucky puppy. The vet said that he is the picture of health and is not suffering any adverse reactions since his meeting with the car bumper.
