Front leg worry Empty Front leg worry

Post by wimpy Sat Jan 26 2013, 16:41

Only really noticed this today when Alfie was able to run around in the back garden as the snow has now all gone. As he was running towards me I noticed his front left leg from what I would call the knee was bowed. It was only after seeing this and bringing him inside I noticed when he sat in front of be he was sitting like this (see pic)

I have made an appointment to see the vet tomorrow as I am a little worried he could have a problem. It does not cause him any pain and can walk around with out a problem. I have googled it and read that it is a puppy thing and he will grow out of it and it will form normally as he grows older. Have any of you seen this before and what do you know about it. I would hate for it to cause him problems as he is due for his first walk out of the house Monday.

Cheers
Iain. nail biting

A lot of puppies have loose tendons, but if this is a problem that has suddenly started to happen, I think you're right to take him to the vet. It looks like it could be muscle, tendon or ligament damage.

You've done the right thing - with something like this, a trip to the vets will help. Let us know how it goes!

By all means see the vet, that's the safest thing to do.

However, until Dempsey was about 4 or 5 months old both his front wrists used to 'knuckle over' - it was basically undeveloped tendons. They usually do sort themselves out as they grow.

After doing a bit more searching I have managed to find whet this is.
It is called Knuckling over. It is easy corrected as the early stages.
Here is one of the sites I found on google

I'm thinking the same as eleanor, possible ligament/tendon damage. Let us all know when you get him looked at. Remember though, pups heal super quick. Hope the wee man is ok!

***only just seeing your link on knuckling over, good find Smile***

Hope all goes well with the vet tomorrow, you did the right thing in getting it looked at early and as soon as you noticed it. Things left undiagnosed can sometimes escalate into a worse symptom and be more complex to treat.

Post by wimpy Sun Jan 27 2013, 16:25

So we have been to see the vet today and she has assured us that it will sort its self out as he grows. It has been put down to the fact that the breeder did not feed him properly as when we got him he was under weight and the food they had him on was crap. Since we have had him he has been put on good food and the vet says his weight is spot on but due to the rate he has now grown his tendons and ligaments have not grown at the same speed but they will catch up. The vet has given us some tablets, Cosequin RS they contain vitamins and minerals along with cod liver oil to strengthen his bones and joints.

I asked about strapping or splinting but was told as he is so young and it is not that severe it is best to monitor him over the coming months. She said she has seen it far worse and they would only treat once the bones have grown a lot more. I am a little happier now so watch this space.

Iain thumbs up

I'm only just seeing this now. That's good news from your vet, and I'm glad you went and got it looked at. At least you have peace of mind now! Wouldn't want anything happening to wee Alfie Love Struck

Well he is taking his tablets and vet said he is on the best food so all being well by the time the tablets run out (3 months) he should be ok.
How the hell do you keep a puppy rested and quiet I don't know Surprised
