12 week puppy - couple of questions
Winnie is now 12 weeks old and so far, everything is great. Just a couple of quick queries:-
1. If onions are cooked ie in a stew, could she have a bit mixed in with her normal kibble or is it still poisonous?
2. I pick up Winnie's water after 9pm and she doesn't have any again until morning (around 6.30am). Is this cruel? My hubbie says I'm mean but I read that you could do this to prevent her peeing all night. My only concern is that when I put her to bed at night I give her a kong filled with kibble and peanut butter or honey so that when she's awake she's got something to occupy her (otherwise she cries a lot). However, that would probably make her thirsty, right? Also aren't I going to make her fat as well? Any suggestions of possible healthier kong fillers would be much appreciated.
3. From Monday, Winnie will be able to go out so let the dog walking begin! Is 15mins twice a day ample for a 12 week puppy?

1. Not to sure ill look into it!
2. No thats not cruel its fine for the time being till she is toilet trained and a bit older, then she will be able to hold on for longer. I would try not to get into the habit of giving her something to eat everynight or it will become a habit and she wont go to sleep without it and it may mean she needs to do a number 2 in the middle of the night lol. A healthier option may be a frozen carott? Oh i used to mash up bannana for mine and stick it in the kong and feeze it, they loved that! Can u not give her a toy or something else to go to bed with?
3. Yes its ample while shes little its really just to get her used to being outside, different smells and sounds and sights and most importantly socialisation with other people/kids/cats/dogs! She will still be getting most of the exercise she needs from playtime with you x

Thanks Carly
Actually, I've only just started leaving a filled kong for her at night and she has been doing number 2s!!! I think I'll take your advice and maybe just give her them when we're going out or something. I will try your healthier tips too!

yea i think u would be wise to nip it in the bud at night time. At nightime try and just make it as unstimulating as possible, no fuss or treats just relaxed and quiet and calm. Yea she may cry for a bit if she wakes up and is bored but you'll find that in a week she will no the routine and wont be fased, and most importantly she will of learnt to comfort herself without treats or toys etc. I fill up kongs for mine when i go out in the day x

Have a check of http://staffy-bull-terrier.co.uk/dangerousfoods.html Claire, everything else that has been said I totally agree with, honestly, if she starts whining and crying at night in her cage, ignore her. It's hard, but it does stop, you might be lucky and she might twig really quickly!

Onions are poisonous raw (especially the skins), but are not poisonous when cooked (except the skins!). However, stews in themselves are not particularly good for them (not bad either) as you've cooked all the goodness out of it! Great for humans as we have a different digestive system, but will do nothing for a dog!
As long as she's got fresh water in the same place for the rest of the day, then taking it up at night is no problem at all, but I wouldn't give anything at all to eat overnight. It'll make her want to poo.
If she cries, ignore her. I know that sounds harsh, but in a couple of days or so she'll be used to it & will sleep right through. If you're really bothered then give her an indestructible toy, but if she's crying because she's not with you this won't help at all!

I didn't know this! I thought onions were bad full stop. Whenever we have bolognese or somethintg and I give the dogs a bit I painstakingly pick each flake of onion out! Well thanks Caryll that'll save me about 10 minute every couple of days.

We don't give Dempsey any leftovers. Partly because they are rarely any leftovers left, but also because he has his own food which is far better for him. Spices etc can only go to upsetting their stomachs.

Yeah spices are not a good move for dogs! Found that out the hard way with my first dog when I was younger. We only give any leftovers if its bland but as in your house there is very rarely anything left over!

Maybe I should show this to the mother in law.
The one thing Molly always has whenever I have it, is tomato soup with bread.
