Feel really guilty..
My little staff murphy had injured his front nail on a long walk last week.
It had pretty much heeled by yesterday and all was looking well.
As he hadnt been walked much (avoid infection/ pain) he was getting a little bit hyper and ready to get back out.
I gave him a tin foil cardboard bit to have a play with but he ended up reopening his nail and bleeding everywhere and I feel a bit guilty as was a silly idea to give him something that he throws about and pounces on with an injured paw.
Needless to say, he got epic amounts of cuddles last night.
Its the 7th injury in his 3 year life on his paws. (other 6 where his dew claw from pouncing on things too hard up park).
Do any of you find the dew claws are often damaged/ injured?

Re: Feel really guilty..
Moo has damaged hers a few times, we have contemplated with having them removed but she hasn't done it recently. I hope he heals quickly. You could try bandaging it when he wants to play Xx

Thankfully, touch wood, Rocky hasn't had a nail injury, just know I should not have said that

Dempsey's had several injuries to his dew claws, plus several infections in between his toes!

Re: Feel really guilty..
Ledger managed to rip out one of his dew claws I was a wreck but he just sat there watching it bleed, it healed well (good job as the bandages lasted about 30 seconds) and the claw grew back luckily he hasn't done it again yet I just make sure I keep it trimmed so it doesn't get to that hook stage

Re: Feel really guilty..
The biggest problem I've had with Loki's claws are him catching them on my skin but I know they can have some problems with them. Hope it heals up soon.

Re: Feel really guilty..
Some dogs have softer nails than others, just make sure they are trimmed especially the dew claw as that doesn't get worn down on walks.

Re: Feel really guilty..
Dempsey has always had problems with his paws! If he isn't tearing his dew claws, he's getting infections and pulled muscles!
Keeping the dew claws trimmed can help to minimise the chances of them tearing.
