new staff owner :D
Hi! I'm Laura and I'm the proud new owner of Thor, an 18 month old rescue staff. Since adopting him on Monday he's settled in really well, as you'll probably see from the pictures. He's so laid back he's virtually horizontal, until you take him out on a walk!

Great choice he is gorgeous. Our 2 rescues settled in well we only got Dylan 4 weeks ago he is in a routine and settling well. Takes around 6 months though to properly settle down or longer

Re: new staff owner :D
thanks at first when my mum found out i was getting a staff she was a little worried, but he's definitely proved her wrong, i've only heard him bark 3 times since monday and he's properly house trained, i think the only problems we have are him being boisterous on walks (which is probably just because it's a new place) and him trying to get into bed with us, which is just him trying to snuggle XD

Re: new staff owner :D
Will settle eventually do you use a harness on walks. We crate our 2 at night and never heard a bark from them ever. They are both house trained too.

Re: new staff owner :D
at the moment we're using a collar but i'm considering getting a harness, but if i'm honest the only parts on a walk where he pulls is if he wants to go and look at a new thing, which usually turns out to be a bush or an empty bottle or something would you recommend using a harness instead? i've tried researching it but the internet seems to be about half and half for collars and harnesses :/

Re: new staff owner :D
also we're a little dubious about crating him at night because we tried on monday night, and he literally tore the bottom tray in two and bent all the bars on the crate :S

Hi and welcome from me, Millie and Bella.
If he isn't used to a crate he might need to be introduced to it slowly, leaving the door open and lettinghim go in out, and building up the time that the door is closed

Congrats on the new dog, he looks lovely. It'll take him a while to settle in to the new surroundings and then you will see a big difference. You should try a harness, a lot of people prefer a collar/lead or halti type lead but I swear by my harness and it was the best thing I ever bought for him. Plus they aren't too expensive to try.
My mum was the same

Re: new staff owner :D
Welcome he's gorgeous, and I do have a soft spot for brindles, as you can see. If you want to put him in a crate at night, do it very slowly over time, let him get comfortable with it first.

Re: new staff owner :D
just a quick update, Thor is slowly getting more used to the crate, i can put him in it for an hour or so while i'm not in the house, but on a night time he sleeps on a dog bed in our bedroom

Re: new staff owner :D
Arr. Blue sleeps on a dog bed next to me too. Everynight when I get undressed andget into bed he jumps on the bed gives me a cuddle then jumps down. On his way back to his bed he picks up my socks and takes them to his bed to cuddle

how mad is that!?! he's the spit of him! oh also another update, Thor had his last injection today, and was good as gold in the vets, apart from a little game of "let's go look at what's behind this door that says no entry" lol i had friends round this afternoon and also discovered that he likes to have a little gulp of everybody's tea who's brave enough to put it on the floor :3
