Walk HELP
OKay so we got ozzie yesterday, hes just turned 3.
when viewing ozzie he came back to his owners or at least stopped running off and turned round when they shouted. they said he can be stubborn but take a tennis ball and hes golden.
but he seemed to completely ignore us outside.
in the house, he will come straight away but as soon as we are on a walk its like he's deaf. ( literally we paniced thinking he was )
he wont come for a treat or anything not even ball like things, hes not interested at all.
even if sash comes back nothing, hes off, he doesnt run but just trots as i call it.
obviously his recall needs work as they said he can be a bit stubborn. but was him ignoring us just because its all new and hes not used to us? what can we do to help his recall.
as i said he has amazing recall in the house even if hes got his bone he'll come.

Re: Walk HELP
It's just a matter of being consistent repeating things is the way to go. Reward with healthy treats when he comes back. We have done this method with ours and it works. Knock the treats off when he starts to come back regularly and replace with a good fuss

Re: Walk HELP
It's all new & he doesn't really know you yet!
You could try a long training line (about 50' - you can get them off ebay... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/50ft-15-4-Metres-Long-Dog-and-Horse-Training-Lunge-Lead-Webbing-/310499503821?pt=UK_Pet_Supplies_Dogs&var=&hash=item484b366ecd ). Let it trail, keeping the end within easy reach at all times & every so often call him back. If he doesn't respond immediately, just pick the end up & reel him in!

Re: Walk HELP
It's probably a mixture of him settling in and getting used to you all, and needing a bit of work. Practice with the long line, he'll be OK, just make sure you're more stubborn than he is

Re: Walk HELP
Do you have a small squeaky toy you could take out on walks with you just to get his attention.
Have you considered clicker training ??
Would definitely go with the long training line, we use one with Rocky when over at the park.

Re: Walk HELP
where you are walking is all new and exciting and he will need to get used to your voices, I find squeaky toys help get that initial reaction I carry a kong tiny tennis ball which squeaks its just a practical size and then reward with a treat when he comes back

That's the best advice ever, Loki loves squeaky things, I can't believe it didn't occur to me it might get his attention better. Thanks for this

Re: Walk HELP
Other options would be to take high value treats for when he comes back, the kind he doesn't get at home. My wife will regularly cook bacon until it's very crispy and then give the dog very tiny-sized bits every time he comes back outside. Because he won't get bacon at home, it's a high value treat for him.
You can also try the first times to walk him after he wakes up but before breakfast. That way he will be hungry (don't worry, dogs are feast or famine animals and love working for their food) and you can use his breakfast as recall rewards.

Re: Walk HELP
A long line and squeky toy are the best options along with patience and consistancy
