Romeo's in surgery
First topic message reminder :
so Romeo has two ruptured knee caps... and he's in surgery as i type this.... i have no idea how everything is going to go, i'll keep you posted
update:::
he had an indentation on the joint surface of the inner fide of his left femur where there what was called an OCD lesion. there where signs of inflammation: arthrosis, and effusion (increased amount of joint fluid)
It was roughly the sma eon his right knee too just not as bad as the left.'
They then did Mosaic arthroplasty on both knees. the cleaned off the danaged ares and made 5mm hole on both knees in a cylander like shape... like an apple core'er, and then took bone joint cartilage from another part of his leg to fill it.

Re: Romeo's in surgery
well... the cheeky boy. i went to sleep on the floor with him and when i woke up he was asleep up on the bed.... little blighter.
either way he's muc more mobile and doesn't cry at night anymore. he's still on his pain meds, once in the morning and once at night.
He goes to the bathroom outside well now, but he has no intrest in walking. the vet said i should try to get him to go for little 10min walks everyday.... but he doesnt walk back to the door, as soon as he has done his thing and i go to get him to go for a short walk he like... RUNS back to the apartment to be inside. Not that i can blame him, they shaved his wee bum and its pretty cold outside.
i'm mostly happy that he's getting about with more comfort now, he even waits and positions himself for me to pick him up to go down the stairs, i'm pretty sure he knows its better.
in 5 more days we'll get the stiches out and then he will start psychial thearpy... so that should be intresting.
the only real personality change is that he is even more cuddly and sookie... didnt know it was possible

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Very pleased to hear of Romeo progress.
Do you have a coat for him to wear in the cold, this may encourage him to walk a little further but not too far.

Re: Romeo's in surgery
oh yes, he has three different coas
but it makes no difference because his bum is still exsposed a little. i think he's just no feeling the walking or lacking the confidence maybe. i'll give him until monday and then he must walk more, not just toddler steps out side to pee

Thats really good news, it always amazes me how quickly they bounce back. He's probably still sore, walking will come, have you looked into hydrotherapy pools any further?

Re: Romeo's in surgery
I think the hydrotherapy would be extremely beneficial to Romeo, just take it steady.

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Hey Taryn, omg what a shock for you ... and Romeo .. and us board folk! Still an op. was needed so ultimately it was the best decision for him. He seems to have been in alot of pain and I figure both sides being done at once wont have helped there BUT will have brought its own benefits at the same time, kind of good to get it all done and dusted at once.
Our old staff Charlie (before Milo) had patella luxation one side and began suffering shortly after we rehomed him (I suspect this was why!) he was 14 months old. I know Charlie only had it done one side and Romeo has had two surgeries at once (plus orthopaedic is one of the most painful type of surgery) so it will naturally take longer but Charlie recovered so quickly after the initial first few days :0)
We lost him at 12 years due to a bladder tumour and apart from that he really was fit and well. Apart from some slight muscle loss on that side and a slightly off gate (which no one else would have noticed!) he suffered no ill effects at all throughout his entire life. Like the vet advised you we kept him well exercised and lean/light.
Best wishes to you both and get well vibes coming Romeos way xxxx

Re: Romeo's in surgery
ah its nice to know that charlie recovered so well and lived a rich life.
Romeo likes to poke around the apartment or lay out on the bed and snooze. i cant take him to hydro until the wounds are fully closed and the stiches have been removed. i need to ask for a quote on the pool but i also need to contact my friend who knows where it is. i have a friend at the coffee roastery who is studying psyhio as her degree, so she might give us some help since i'm really strapped for cash after the surgery.
he walked around a little more today out side, kind of just poking his nose here and there checking things out. i thinnk we where outside for about 10mins, which is a new record cause normally he would walk out, do his thing and then demand back in, but this time he took his time which i'm happy with
monday i'll put on his collar and tak him for a shirt walk up the street and back

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Very very slowly, Romeo's hair is starting to grow back, he has ginger stubble on his bald patches now. he managed a nice 15mon walk around the block to which i was rather proud of him too. i Had a mind disagreement with my breeder as she insists that i get a propper pshyio to see to Romeo and i was thinking of taking him to the dog spa to have swimming. i also have a friend styudying pshyio how said they would help me, but that doesnt seem to be very pleasing to my breeder, but i just dont have the money to pay the 1000's€ needed for the one they have at the vets
Re: Romeo's in surgery
Glad he's getting around a bit now - the more movement he has in his legs the quicker it'll all heal properly.
Do what you feel is right for him. His breeder has no say in the matter, other than maybe to give advice from experience!
If your friend can help with the physio, then great, but I don't see why you need to shell out loads of money on professional physio if he doesn't need it!
Just go with your gut feeling!

Glad he is on the mend. Nothing wrong with taking help from your friend. The swimming will definately help him get stronger without the stress on his joints

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Taryn, so pleased Romeo managed a decent walk, you are Romeo's mum and you know best, he is Your baby and if you think your friend can help him for less then it's a no brainer, i may be wrong and out of line for my opinion but that is all it is, and i apologise if i am wrong but is this the same breeder that booked the xray without asking and then not paying or even contributing? if so then the question has to be what does it have to do with her? Wishing Romeo a speedy recovery, >< >< to you and Romeo

Re: Romeo's in surgery
she did recently contribute 150€ to it, which is better then nothing i guess. i just feel a little over beared.
i really have to look into it more.
he is actually walking a little better than normal with his walking, he walks less stiff legged actually, but he does get a funny movenet when he goes into a trot, but i try to keep him from doing that yet, he's just... a staffy
but here is romeo's healing stictches

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Looks like the wounds are nice & clean/healthy. It's just time that's needed now - once the stitches are out you can start to build things up gradually.

i cant wait until they are out so that i can start to build him back up again.

Romeo looks to be healing well, that's all good. A little exercise is great too, just take things steady and gradually build it up, sending lots of hugs to you both >< >< ><
