Romeo's in surgery
so Romeo has two ruptured knee caps... and he's in surgery as i type this.... i have no idea how everything is going to go, i'll keep you posted
update:::
he had an indentation on the joint surface of the inner fide of his left femur where there what was called an OCD lesion. there where signs of inflammation: arthrosis, and effusion (increased amount of joint fluid)
It was roughly the sma eon his right knee too just not as bad as the left.'
They then did Mosaic arthroplasty on both knees. the cleaned off the danaged ares and made 5mm hole on both knees in a cylander like shape... like an apple core'er, and then took bone joint cartilage from another part of his leg to fill it.

Re: Romeo's in surgery
ok so romeo just got out of surgery and he is now home in his show cage since its made from canvas and he cant hurt himself if he knocks around.
he had an indentation on the joint surface of the inner fide of his left femur where there what was called an OCD lesion. there where signs of inflammation: arthrosis, and effusion (increased amount of joint fluid)
It was roughly the sma eon his right knee too just not as bad as the left.'

Poor Romeo... he is on some HEAVY pain meds, he has a head cone on and they shaved him in a poodle like fashion
he has a pain killer patch on his side and right now i'm icing his legs 20mins on 20mins off.
the only funny thing about the whole... thing, was they told me it would be inpossible for him to walk in the next two days and i would need to carry him and support him with a towel... well i put him in his house and then he jumped up and ran off didnt he... So i had to grab him, granted he was a bit wobbly and put him back in and place an ice pack on his leg....
he is now whining and crying rather... chronically.
i went to get his pain meds as well and the woman behind the desk when i canded the prescription goes "wow... that some strong pain killers, i need to check if we even have these" so... romeo is going to be rather stoned i think...
poor thing.
OH
BTW
the whole thing cost 1662€
insurance paid for 1201€ and i had to pay the 460€
yeahhh

Re: Romeo's in surgery
he cant really walk for the next few days, after that its just small 5 mon walks out the front of the yard. he will be on pain meds for the next 20 days and he is thought to be better with in a month or two and he will start physio in two weeks
Re: Romeo's in surgery
my poor little man
he got so upset and started to try and move and cry rather high pitchedly all the time and he tried to get out of his caged so i let him to go sit on the rug and then he freak out when i went to lay on the bed and was trying to get up, and because i'm such a soft sap.... guess who's sleeping on the floor tonight

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Arh I hope he feels better soon. I've slept on the floor when my dog was unwell and I know my dads done the same. They're part of the family and a lot less crying if you're there to comfort them!

i'm glad they did both legs, if they did it in turn it would have cost so... so much more.
I'm rather happy right now because his apitie has started to return and he is more alert

Re: Romeo's in surgery
yeah when i went to the vets i was hoping that they would bandage him give him some meds and tell me to get him to take it wasy.... wasnt exspecting to leave him there and be operated on i must say.... so this is rather a turn of events for me today.
They have told me that the likley hood of it being all good and his not having any more problems is high, but there is always a chance it might come back so to say. and he is probally going to have rather bad knees latter in life.
poor romeo. he was breed and brought to be a show dog, cant do that he has an under bite.
Then we decided to use him for agility or weight pulling.... now we cant do that.
Oh well... he will have to settle for being a soilt pet

Re: Romeo's in surgery
yes, she was actually there wish me. i dont have a car so she drove me to the vets. i think she was in shock mostly, she had very high hopes for this litter of pups and all 3 boys have had problems, the girls are all fine, but still.
it has been pretty stressful, it could not have come at a worse time money wise, but there was nothing i could do, i couldnt have him suffering when i knew theer was an option to fix it so... that what we did

Re: Romeo's in surgery
Good to hear that the breeder is so involved.
A very stressful time for you both, undoubtedly and you did absolutely the right thing Taryn in getting it sorted.
The best thing now is for you and Romeo to have a good night's sleep - you've both had a very hard day.
Sending you all the best >< I can.

Re: Romeo's in surgery
If you havent thought of it yet think about hydrotherapy. I must say im amazed at my exes dog riley and his progress. Only had a few sessions and hes packing on muscle and has made more progress in two weeks than two months after his op on his leg. Either way hope he makes a fit and full recovery very soon, give him a cuddle from us.

Re: Romeo's in surgery
yeah we are going to start hydrotherapy once his wounds are closed.
I'm sleeping on the floor with him so he just spends his time moaning on he floor the poor thing. he's on very strong painkillers though.
i was super happy that this morning when we got up (we woke up early because he was moaning so loud) that he ate his breakfast and then when i took him out side he managed to stand on his own and pee a river seemingly before i picked him up and brought him inside.... its just he's 20kgs.... no light thing to just carry about you know

I am so sorry to read about Romeo, can I ask what happened to him before you took him to the vets only to find out they were keeping him in. I havent been around for a few weeks so may have missed something. Healing viles for Romeo and Pixee sends loads of wet kisses too. Fingers cross all goes well for you both. ><

he was just a little tender in one leg so i took him to see what it was because it seemed to be his knee. they xrays and found he had a birth defect that caused his cells not to mature correctly in his knee joints and so they said the best thing was to fix it now while he was under because it was only going to get worse with age. i have been told if i keep him super fit and light that he can enjoy a normal life, but romeo will never be allowed to get fat. they even said the more muscel he has the better so swimming and sport will be good for him as long as i make sure he heals correctly
