My new Staffy
Hi I have just got a new Staffy bitch from a rescue centre. She was fostered quite a lot by someone before I got her. She has been home now for 48 hours and just sits at the door. She won't eat, she will not do anything (pee or poo) when I take her out but she does it when I get her back home. She goes out every two hours and I'm feeding her exactly the same food she had before.
Should I be worried at this point or not ?

Re: My new Staffy
The centre thinks 2-3 years old but I think a bit younger maybe 18 months.

Re: My new Staffy
It could very well be she just needs time to adjust to her new home and will come around in time

Re: My new Staffy
Hmm. She might just need some time to get used to you. You could try taking her out for a walk as soon as she wakes up in the morning, before she has a chance to do her business.

I'm not to worried about the mess however I am very worried about her not eating. Should I tempt her with canned food instead of dry food.

The lack of eating is possibly stress. If it continues, you may need to take her to the vet just in case. If you think it would help, you could try the canned food. Be careful that you don't introduce too much of it at one time, though, as the change in diet could upset her stomach.

Re: My new Staffy
I think she's probably very anxious & confused. If she was in a foster home she may well have thought that it was her forever home & doesn't understand why she has been moved again.
Give her a little time, patience & love and she'll gradually come round.
I take it she had a clean bill of health when she came to you & that she's drinking ok?
If you want to tempt her to eat, try mixing half a can of sardines (in oil) in with her dry food, or maybe break a raw egg over the top of her dinner. What brand of food are you feeding her?

In that case, I think she probably just needs time. It's an unfamiliar place - she might not feel safe enough to go to the bathroom outside yet.

Yes, she had a clean bill of health and I am feeding her Lathams V-Plan formula.Caryll wrote:I think she's probably very anxious & confused. If she was in a foster home she may well have thought that it was her forever home & doesn't understand why she has been moved again.

Re: My new Staffy
well done on rescuing her we did the same last April and our girl was very similar to what yours is doing. Try something nice that will tempt her like cooked chicken or fish. Im sure in time she will eat properly. Also our girl will not poo wee outside she waits for her garden and does both there.

Looks a good quality food - I don't know how the price compares, but the ingredients are quite good.
As said, try mixing something tasty with the dry (personally I'd steer clear of tinned - it's 80% water!). It sounds like she just needs to settle & feel safe again.

Re: My new Staffy
Sadly I do not have the option of a garden (ground floor flat) so newspapers are the answer ATM. I just took another posters advice and went to get sardines... when I put food in her bowl to mix it, she took quite a few bits of her dry food. PROGRESS !!!Wendy and Mark wrote:well done on rescuing her we did the same last April and our girl was very similar to what yours is doing. Re: My new Staffy
Sounds like she just needs time to settle in to her new surroundings, she may have been used to running about in the garden where she was before so will need time to adjust to your home and home life.
Try adding something different to her food, some sardines or a little cooked cooled chicken, we do this for Rocky and he really enjoys his food.

Re: My new Staffy
Best of luck , sure it's a settling in period , the first walk you give her when she gets up , is it a short walk or a long one, the longer the walk the more desperate she will get and remember treats and lots of praise when she eventually does go outside.

Hey Craig.
Glad you've joined up.
Mattie (was Sausage) is well known on here.
She's done well on the Lathams, and the food you bought yesterday is also a good one. Adding the odd bit of smelly liquid from tuna/sardines etc will get her eating.
I think you'll find in a few days, once she's settled, that she's back to normal. She'll bond quickly with you.
All the best,
Keith
PS - feel free to phone mate with any queries. Always happy to help.
And I'll drop some X-box games off.

Sometimes when dogs have been in a foster home, they take a while to re-settle, but give her time and patience and she'll come round.

Re: My new Staffy
Youtube got me from Gerry Rafferty's "Baker Street" to The Rolling Stones' "Paint it Black" in a few clicks.
Awesome, always wondered what that Stones track was called.
"City to City" coming up....
PS - supermarket tomorrow night mate - let me know if you want any doggy treats etc. Or milk.
