Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Well, Maddie used her new collar this afternoon. Apparently she walked well, but managed to wriggle her face out of it at one point .
Here she is trying it on for the first time
She previously had a halti that she sulked and wriggled when we put it on. She has only tried the Canny once so we shall see how she reacts next time.
So far so good though...

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
I'm sure Maddie will do well with the Canny Collar, Rocky has one and it definitely has made a difference to him walking on the lead. Just need to persevere with it really.

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Another update...
Hubby walked Maddie over the weekend and has been singing the praises of the canny collar. I tried walking her with it yesterday and had to hand her over to him as Mads was so pully.
Back to work routine today so I walked Maddie first thing. I find the collar a bit fiddly (but haven't used it enough times to be familiar with it yet). The nose-bit fell off about three times on our walk (maybe I am not fitting it right?) but due to the design this does not make her able to escape as the collar buckles around the neck.
However, the weirdest aspect this morning was to be walking along staring at the world and suddenly noticing the lead go slack. PANIC!! It turned out that Maddie was just walking nicely I don't think I have felt the lead go slack like that since we got her back in October. It wasn't a one-off either. She walked nicely for great chunks of the walk.
I'll keep you informed but so far it is a

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Just a little tip for using the Canny Collar, try to keep the lead in a straight up direction from the dogs body if you can, rather than having it going along the back of the dog, it helps. Have a look at the video below it shows very clearly how to use it, sorry it's a Rottie but I do love them too:

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Well we have had a mixed day today. Maddie has learnt how to get the face bit off! Having watched the video I can see I have been letting Maddie have a bit more lead and have let it go slack along her back (both things I should not be doing )
The only thing is Maddie loves to sniff and that means putting her nose down (sometimes for ages if a previous dog has wee'd war and peace ) I don't want to stop her doing that.
I will try to keep the lead shorter and upwards tomorrow. Thank you Kathy for the advice and link

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
well I have decided I can't wait no longer for conclusive testing and am going to order one tonight for 1st class delivery as my OH looks like a monkey after walking Tommy for 2 days (it's not worth the )
Hope everybody does well but what I have seen so far seems positive

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Oh my goodness, what a walk
Now, to put it in context it was raining and Maddie was wearing her coat. Both of these make Maddie less mad. Also, there had been an incident earlier in the day where she tripped hubby over on the middle of a road so she may have been subdued after that. But...
...she was FANTASTIC She didn't pull at all for the first half an hour, and when she did it only needed a little pressure on the lead to bring her back, not the 'mini hippo on a rope' she can be. Admittedly she didn't sniff much as she wanted to come home but I managed to keep the nose bit on until we were stood on the doorstep when we got home. She walked nicely and even stayed under control whilst trying to pick a fight with two husky-types (she even sat down, but carried on growling).
Unbelievable! If the collar caused this then it is a miracle worker. I can't wait for tomorrow's walks to see how she is.

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
We have been using the canny for weeks now. I find the having to hold it upright a real pain and Maddie is far too intelligent for her own good and escapes regularly The actual collar and head piece are very good and give nice control. We now cheat by placing her Halti over the top of the canny, thus holding it in place. The Halti is attached to her collar and is not used for control. Now Maddie can sniff as much as she likes, and when she walks well her lead can become slack (as we had taught her before getting the canny). We get double sulks and sighs when we put TWO head collars on but it seems to be a good compromise so far (we have been doing this for over a week with no apparent drawbacks).
Of course Maddie could just behave herself in public then we wouldn't need all this stuff

Just a tip from me as I've been using one for just over a wek now , I purrchased at the same time a Trixie training lead and it is , or can be, over the shoulder and adjustable buckles so it hangs at just the right length off my shoulder to keep the slack off the canny collar and hands free walking If Tommy steps a little out of line a hand to the lead and a slight backward tug and all done

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Glad to know I'm not the only one who had problems with the nose loop slipping off - thought it was something I was doing wrong. I must say the canny collar is very good when it is on and working properly - but think Densil is also too intelligent for his own good and has worked out how to get it off. I know he doesn't like it because he is continually shaking his head on walks. think I may go back to harness for a while and see how it goes.

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
Dave, I can't picture what you mean but it sounds interesting. Any chance of a photo please?
And Densil, the collar coming off was the bane of walks! I have never tried a harness as I have been told by several people a lot more knowledgeable than me that they don't discourage pulling if you have a very pully dog. Having said that, Maddie is a lot less pully now than when she first came home

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
I know the canny collars are old news now but thought I should let people know we don't use it any more, because Maddie doesn't need it. She walks much better now so we are keeping it in case she needs reminding in future. The canny was a great help in teaching her how to walk well, especially with the halti on top to keep her from wriggling out!
Overall I would consider the canny collar a success

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
That's fantastic news my problem with using this was I thought it'd work by not giving them the chance to pull rather than them learning not to pull, but the fact that you don't need it now says otherwise.

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
I'm afraid I gave up with the canny collar - too fiddly as the strap kept falling off, plus I used to have to take the whole thing on/off halfway through the walk while I let him loose on a long training line, so I have gone back to harness with front ring and double ended lead

Did you find it useful at all, though?

It did stop the pulling most of the time but Densil did not like it and would try and get it off, as he does not like anything that goes over his nose, such as the halti. I now use a harness with d ring at the front and a double ended lead. he still pulls if there is something he wants to get too, but most of the time he walks ok, so I just put up with it.

Re: Maddie and her new Canny Collar
I haven't used the canny collar but have a similar figure of eight one. I must say its been a godsend to me as greatly reduced pulling.

I have stopped using the canny collar now as he has learnt so much from it but my lazy daughter still takes Tommy out on it as the easy option when I'm away
