Abandoned Puppy - Is He a Staff/Cross?
Hi. I have a 5 month (my estimate) old pup. He was lost/abandoned over two months ago. I could not trace his original owner, despite contacting my local SPCA. I suspect he was abandoned, not lost, but I can't be sure. I've taken him into my care and am absolutely delighted with him, and he also seems very happy in his new home.
I think there is at least some Staff in him, but he certainly doesn't look like a pure breed. His ears look too big, his head seems too small, and he just doesn't have that Staff look.
Ultimately, I'm very happy with him, and it doesn't matter what breed he is. But from and education and welfare point of view, it would be useful to find out more about him.
Edit: I can't upload a photo, but you can find one here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/51373014@N03/8342728300/

I'd say he's definitely got Staffy in him - just look at that adorable face! I have no idea what he could be crossed with though.

I've read that certain breeds are predisposed to certain types of illnesses and mentalities. So it might be useful to know what to look out for in terms of the pups health, and to know what type of training is most suitable, considering it may turn into a powerful dog. I admit I don't know much about dogs, but clearly different breeds require different things. I once owned a Springer, and it required a different level and a different type of exercise than that which my new pup needs.
And thanks everyone for your replies!

Definitely has stafford in him. Lovely looking boy!
I wouldn't bog yourself down with the public perception of what traits Staffords are supposed to have - if you bring him up properly - train him, socialise him, feed him properly on the best food you can afford - then he will turn out a model citizen! ><

They say they are high energy breeds ... I manage not taking Taz walks every day - despite the fire of hell i shall prbably receive from other users on here for not religiously keeping to their recommended extreme 2 x 45 hour walks a day !! - I keep her mind busy with other things when I'm not fit to go out .. Its all about you, your dog, your commitment to your dog, the time/training you put in.. and observation of behaviour patterns.
exercise can be achieved walking/running/ agility, tasks around the house & garden - Taz is happy if Im happy ...
but you say you've already had a high energy dog anyway -
Thanks for the advice Taz.

2 x 45 mins a day is the basic, not an extreme! And no hell given!

Re: Abandoned Puppy - Is He a Staff/Cross?
I take Harley for a 20-30 minute fetch session in the morning, and then he gets a 30-40 minute walk in the evening. At the moment that seems to be enough. He likes his down time as soon as we get home, which I think is a sign that he's had his fill of running. I'm a regular jogger, so when he's old enough I'd like to train him to run alongside me.

That's fine for his age. The general rule is 5 minutes of lead walking per months of age, twice a day, plus some off lead running/playing etc. From your pic, he looks a little older than 5 months, so you've probably got his exercise just about right.

That sounds great, but I think it's the camera angle.
Here's a top view shot of him:

Re: Abandoned Puppy - Is He a Staff/Cross?
Well done for rescuing Harley - he looks like a glorious mixture to me, definitely some Staffy, and maybe some Jack Russell Terrier and perhaps a tint of Golden Labrador. You estimate his age at about 5 months - he looks a bit older than that to me too, best is to look at his teeth. Does he have any puppy teeth? If he has then he would under a year old max. If not, older than 10 months min. The adult teeth grow yellower as the dog gets older (unless they are brushed often!)
It sounds like you're doing a great job with him - good luck with him and do let us know how you are getting on with him.

I'm not very good with guessing crosses either, however he does look to have some Staffy about him there.
Good luck with it all.

I'd be very surprised if a staffy didn't have something to do with his creation.

Oooh he's scrumptious First thought was that he reminded me of a staffordshire x corgi that I once met! But I can definitely see some kind of terrier mix!

He's a sweetheart and I was going to say Staff x Jack (that's with out seeing him properly) If you are able to try and get on a basic training course with a trainer that's knowledgeable of bull breeders and terriers... All dogs will train well with time and patience and lots of love. Good luck he's adorable
