drontal + shower every other day
Hi there,
I just discovered that Murphy can come running with me at the park. WE have run for like 6km across grass, mud, water, etc... It's a wonderful activity we both enjoy and can take advantage of. Problem comes when coming back home. Unfortunately, having a shower is much easier for me than for Murphy. Well, Murphy is OK with showers (as long as he receives a ton of cheese) but I have a problem with Drontal.
When Murphy was 6 months old, he got this demidex and needed a treatment. Vet told me it was due to having used the supermarket antifleas. We changed to Drontal after the treatment and we never had the same problem again.
My questions:
1. Does Drontal continue working after a shower with only water?
2. How can I manage to take out all the mud without having problems with demidex again?
A neighbour of mine uses a water pressure karcher with his dog each time he comes muddy.
I guess you can imagine how much I'd like to make this workable :-)
Thanks a lot!

Re: drontal + shower every other day
Drontal is a worming tablet, not spot on treatment.
Dermodex occurs when the immunity is low and mites take over and cause fur loss. If he has a good immunity now, he shouldn't get it again.

I'm not a vet & don't pretend to be one, but.....
Your vet is talking a load of claptrap! Demodex is not caused by using a supermarket flea preparation! It's caused by the Demodectic Mite which is present in all dogs, but is normally controlled by the immune system. Some dogs (especially very young ones) have immature immune systems & the mite gets out of control.
Drontal is a wormer, not a flea or mite treatment anyway! Advocate is the one that treats Demodex.
Personally I only use a flea/mite treatment if there's a need to - ie if there are symptoms of them having the fleas/mites.

It should be okay. As rescuestaffords said, Dermodex is due to a low immune system, so showering won't affect it.
However, I wouldn't advise showering your dog every other day, as this could wash out the natural oils from his coat and damage the fur and skin. To be clear, are you talking about a quick squirt with the hose or a shower with soap?

Re: drontal + shower every other day
Hi again!
Sorry everybody, I meant Advocate spot on, not drontal. I meant the antifleas.
I'm talking about a thirty seconds long watering with the shower head and no soap at all. Is that ok?
Besides, do you think he shouldn't need Advocate anymore or Drontal? None is too expensive but, to be honest, I don't want to have reminders every now and then if they're not necessary.
Thanks a lot!

Re: drontal + shower every other day
I only treat if there is a problem so personally I would stop until there's a need for it!
Drontal is still necessary every three months though.

Re: drontal + shower every other day
If Murphy is completely over the Demodex, then he shouldn't need the advocate regularly.
I know that many people use Advocate as a monthly preventative treatment for fleas etc, but I don't & I've never had a problem with fleas on my dogs!

Re: drontal + shower every other day
You certainly learn loads on this site! We joined a 12month puppy plan and Charlie gets Advocate each month as part of it...I assumed you had to give a worm/flea treatment each month....our cat is terrible at bringing back fleas though so maybe it's for the best

Re: drontal + shower every other day
There are obviously circumstances where regular flea treatment is necessary. All I'd point out is that although cat fleas will bite a dog, they don't actually live on them.
Worming should always be done every 3 months.
