Sad Debo was sick and still is :(.

Post by jola139 Fri Dec 21 2012, 06:58

Hi again.
Yesterday evening came home from work, took Debo for a walk. After few minutes walking he was sick, difficult to say what it was but was a lot of it, his stool was fine, firm. And he was alright after, normal Debo. We came back home and had supper. Ate it all had a drink,we played, bit of training. Nothing worring in his behaviour. Went to sleep and around 6am he was sick again ( on my bed Surprised ). We jump up off the bed and poor Debo thought he did something wrong. Now I could see what it was-his food with a bit of grass. Took him out and his stool was fine again. So today he's on diet, just water. My OH's going to pop to vet,we need reworming table, he will ask about it.
He doesn't have anything new, every morning I let him lick off yogurth pot, he has kong with frozen penut butter and he eats at 10.30am around 70g( he's not a big morning eater) and 8pm -210g.

grass eating can make them sick its their way of settling their tums. I wouldnt worry too much if he is still eating/drinking normally. A trip to the vet is a good idea if your worried about him Smile

as above , just keep an eye on him , some dogs eat grass to be sick, and some dogs (like my 2) just eat grass because they like it , not so nice when you have to assist them at the other end later though Rolling Eyes any real probs and pop him along to the vet but at the moment this is just run of the mill dog stuff , I know you've had lots of concerns in the past but try and forget about them and treat it as a one off

Could be from the grass. You could try starving but skipping a meal or just feeding chicken in rice for a day will be just as good

We dont use the tap water here either. I've heard so many horror stories about it, not worth the risk. Maybe try giving Debo some plain natural yogurt to settle his tummy and get it back in balance. Just a couple of teaspoons should do the trick. We also give Rocky a piece of ginger chew sweet to settle his tummy.

Probably not. Young dogs often seem to get the odd little upset & it goes on its own withing 48 hours (with a little TLC!).

Update. Came from work yesterday evening, took him for a walk and gave him half of his daily meal. No side effects. He slept with us ( risk worth to take Big Grin ), no problems. This morning stool was firm but on the pillow in his cage found dry stain of vomit. I think he was sick yesterday when we were at work and ate it sick . My Oh left kong filled with frozen penutbutter, I think that caused it.

I'm taking him to the vet tomorrow. It's been on and off for the last week. It was always same scenario- fine all day, playfull, eating, drinking, pooing perfect-late at night/early morning he was sick. All his food undigested. On few occasion there were hair balls. Do you think he could somehow picked my hair from the floor, and it will get stuck to his intestines?

They obviously don't know much about Staffords, then! He's perfect size!
Kennel Club Breed Standard...
Size
Desirable height at withers 36-41 cms (14 to 16 ins), these heights being related to the weights. Weight: dogs: 13-17 kgs (28-38 lbs); bitches 11-15.4 kgs.

Can you think of nothing out of the ordinary that is happening to bring on these sickness bouts? Is he chewing his bedding or the carpet etc? Is he licking himself & swallowing hair?

At first I thought it was doggy sausages my OH bought for him but Debo ate first one on last Saturday and the sickness began before that. He likes chewing his doys but spits out remainigs. Sometimes he licks the carpet maybe then he picked up some hair. Today we thought we will starve him for a day but he sat by his bowl like his really hungry so we gave him a bit.

Seems to have gone on for some time, and forgive me for skim reading, have you tried starving for 24hrs and a change of food? Moo was terrible when I first got her and after swapping feeds over and advice here she could only eat a fish diet Xx

Took a few months to find a food that suited but well worth it Xx

Back from the vet. Debo was given some injections to stop vomiting and to balance stomach acids. Cerenia tabs and zantac tabs to take home. Put him on chicken/rice till his fine, don't let him eat grass because that would make him vomit, that's mean walks on the lead only for now. He lost a 1kg since Satrurday Sad . The vet told me if it won't stop will have to do x-ray. Shell I make a claim now or wait and see if we needs more treatment.

That's entirely up to you. You could claim what you've spent up to now & make a seperate claim later on if necessary (you will already have paid the excess, so any further claims will be for the full amount), or you can wait and see.

Sorry to read about Debo. I was reluctant to say anything before, but I had something similar with my boy in April this year and was given the same medication by the Vet as you. But I was advised to use the Hills tinned food for a few weeks, the ones you often have given after an op. Thinks its chicken and rice and easy to digest.

Each time the tablets ran out he was sick again although perfectly fine in himself.

Anyway Harry had a scan, later the camera put down and x-rays taken, as well as the initial blood screening, and the result thankfully was that they decided it was due to 'dietary indiscretion'. In other words the little so and so had scoffed something horrid (he is a little hoover on a walk and will eat anything at all and I mean anything)

It took about 4 or 5 weeks of just Hills tinned food (no treats or anything else) to put him right and he was then perfectly ok. Will never know what he had eaten and I could have gone on a cruise for what it cost me in Vet Bills because I didn't have insurance. But he's the only love in my life and I wanted him well. Watch him like a hawk now though to make sure he doesn't do it again.

Good luck and hope Debo is better very soon.

Whenever Rocky is sick and will not eat his regular food we get a can of Chappie for him. I know this is not the greatest quality food but he will eat this when he wont eat anything else. It's just like a fish paste and is easily digestible, this too is often recommended by vets to give to convalescing dogs/recovering from ops etc.

Hope that Debo is feeling better very soon, think I would start the claim now, you can always cancell later if necessary.
