Laila won't swim and chews everything..help?
Hi
3 weeks ago my partner and I got our little girl pup Laila, she is now 14 weeks old. She is Black with a little white bit on her chest.
Took her to the beach for the first time and she didn't want to go near the water, I thought staffy's loved water, is there anyway I can get her to like swimming?
She is also chewing everything, I have tried stop chew sprays but.. she loves it. any other suggestions?
thanks
Mitch

Some dogs take to water and others don't. Mine at the mo loves it, but we went on holiday to the beach and she wouldn't swim there, put her in a river or lake and she swims away. Laila is still young and prob will pick it up. With the chewing get lots of toys etc, have you tried crate training her??
Hiya and welcome by the way

Thanks, I may try taking her down to the lakes see if she likes that and just try introducing it slowly.
She has lots of toys but soon as something new is left outside, its chewed.
No I haven't heard of crate training, is it worth looking into?
Thankyou

I think its very much a staffy thing to chew! I lost many a heal to my first staffy! I just have tons of toys for mine now and she doesn't touch anything that isn't hers, shes older though.
Crate training would help if she is chewing everything! Its not something I have done but a lot of people on here swear by it and someone will come on and advise more on it!
I taught mine to swim by throwing sticks into the water a gradually making them go further out, now she just goes in on her own. My first staff never swam and hated water though.

If you have a real chewer I would definitely recommend crate training. Have a look here for hints on how.....https://staffy-bull-terrier.niceboard.com/t17-information-how-to-crate-train-your-dog
As to swimming, some do & some don't. Even those who do will often only like one type of water! Bandit used to swim in rivers, but would only paddle in the sea (he also used to drink it & then get an upset stomach, but that's another story!). Dempsey won't go near water & will tip toe past even a small puddle. Just introduce it slowly & make it fun with a floating toy etc.

Don't worry about the swimming, Molly hated water up until about 4 months old, then she took to it like a duck to water!

I'd advise to crate train Laila and get plenty of toys for her. When you see her chewing something she shouldn't, tell her firmly "NO" then give her one of her toys, she'll soon get the message. If your out of the house, putting her in a crate with plenty of toys to chew will definately ease the situation and it'll be less stress for you.
As for getting her to like water and swimming, all staffys are different, out of the 4 i've had only one of them loved the sea, the others would just paddle...As for Hollie she's only had one experience of water so far, and thats when she fell in the park lake
Good Luck

My puppy hated the water when she was younger, her sister from the same litter had always loved it. I think its down to the dog, however you can gradually get them used to it by making sure they can touch the bottom and playing with toys in very shallow water. Other dogs playing in the water will also encourage her to go on in and get her feet wet! So try and find her a friend to play with when you go to the beach!
