Nervous of new puppy
Hi there, I don't post a lot as I don't have regular access to the internet but I was wondering if anybody has any tips on bringing round an adult to a puppy? My female staffy Lottie is pretty much scared of my partners new puppy (an Alaskan malamute). Lottie has insecure dominance coupled with anxiety and some predatory behaviour so obviously we did introductions very carefully and we haven't allowed pup to over-harass her. As long as pup is calm/sleepy she seems as ease but when he wants to romp and is batting at her or biting at her, she shakes, tucks her tail in and tries to hide. I'm really hoping she will come round and play with him, she's only four years of age and she plays with my brothers dog so I know she has it in her. She is capable of being firm too - she can tell my brothers dog off if he is too rough without going over the top. I feel it's a good thing to have a pup around her, I'm sure this will help to build her social skills but I don't like to see her frightened, she is normally the opposite!
Thanks you!
Thanks you!

It just needs patience the more times there introduced the better. Hopefully they will get along better

Re: Nervous of new puppy
Have tried some tug games - pup loves it, Lottie still not sure, she gets excited and playful but would rather jump on my and lick me than grab the tuggy! We manage to get her to play a little tug with my mums puppy which is a month older but after a few good tugs on it, she claimed it as her own and pup backed off. Naturally tug is her favourite game, but it always ends in her claiming it for herself then she sits and picks at the rope hehe ^^'
She always gets used to dogs after a certain amount of time has elapsed, but me and my partner don't live together yet, so its like everytime pup visits we're starting over again. They are going on first pack walk all together (I have a chihuahua too) on friday, I'm hoping the walks will bond them together

socialising them more is a good thing. They can get used to each other quicker. Im sure when the pup grows a little the problem will fade

Re: Nervous of new puppy
He generally respects her but after a while he gets frustrated with her not playing or interacting with her so he stands and barks at her, which seems to scare her further. We try not to allow him to do this and distract his attention onto something else like a toy or chew. I will have to post a video is she does give in and play!

The more they are around each other with no bad incidents the better they will get along. If you can walk them together as much as possible this will help build unity and make other interactions better since there won't be as much nervous energy

Rocky can sometimes react to malamutes and huskys when out for walks. We have noticed that this is to do with their eyes though. They do have quite noticeable eyes and can appear to be staring when they are not. This may be something to bear in mind when you introduce your dogs and try to avoid them looking at each other directly to begin with.

Re: Nervous of new puppy
All good advice above. Pups CAN be overwhelming to an older dog, especially if they are bigger.
Just keep on with the social contact between them and they will probably become the best of friends.
Good luck!

Re: Nervous of new puppy
Thanks for advice Lottie is usually more comfortable with husky/malamute/inuit type dogs or "wolfy" shaped dogs, as she used to live with my brothers shepherd plus when I got her I used to take her out with a pack of northern inuits - she never challenged them once they got along very well. In this case, she's nervous of puppies I think. She is being so wonderful and tolerant of both puppies and I'm so proud of her, the icing on the cake would be to see her relax so I'm looking forward to it. Even the chihuahua now plays with my brothers shepherd and my mums shepherd puppy!
