Dog treat for training
Hi there. I am trying to improve Lolas recall at the moment and was wondering if anyone could suggest a good homemade recipie for dog treats. I have always used shops bought treats for training and for general treats, but when on walks, Lola has no interest in treats what so ever regardless if another dog is around or if she is on her own with me she is just not interested. I know there are recipies on this site but wondered if anyone could particularly recomend one or two as being favourite of their own dog.
cheers
Rich

Re: Dog treat for training
I use frankfurter sausages thinly sliced and halved.
My 2 will do anything if I got these in my pocket !

As a high value reward we use small pieces of cheese. For Rockys training we now use Beaphar Joint Support Nuggets as in the link below:

I also use cheese or chicken for outdoor training where there are lots of distractions! Anything that has a strong smell works best, perfect for re-call!

Re: Dog treat for training
We make liver treats for Sophie. Simmer pigs liver with carrots, garlic and water for about 20 minutes then strain, keeping the liquor for gravy on her tea.
Cut up the liver into very small pieces and scatter on a baking tray and bake at Gas Mark 1 for an hour and a half. They have the advatage of being gluten free and as Sophie has so many food allergies they are really valuable for her.

Re: Dog treat for training
Pilchard bread! It stinks and my 2 place hugely high value on it:
Crush up a tin of pilchards really really well
Add crushed garlic and carrot if desired
Add 1 egg
Add enough self raising flour and milk to get a sponge cake type of consistency
Place in the oven in a loaf/cake tin for about 20 minutes or until dry.
Seriously - this has worked like a charm for us!
