Health concerns for white puppy
Hi all
I have been reading through past threads on here, and i've seen threads/posts regarding the possible health issues with all white staffs (deafness, skin complaints etc).
The puppy i'm picking up on Friday (I may not have mentioned previously I am getting her Friday ) has been bread by a family member and I know the health of both parents is good. (mum is black with white markings and dad is white with brown patches ... mums first litter and dad's second and all those pups were healthy)
... but now i've got myself worried that there may be an issue with my little lady.
She's coming to the vets on Sat afternoon for her first jabs and i'm thinking of asking them to check her over at the same time ....
Could they do any tests to see if she's ok then?
Realistically what is the 'risk' of her being poorly/deaf?
I've hopfully got myself wound up over nothing but i'm worried all the same ...

Re: Health concerns for white puppy
The risk of her being deaf is still low, just that it's higher in all-white dogs than others. I don't think the vet would do a bunch of tests there and then without any real reason for concern. If you notice anything weird about her not listening to you (I don't mean usual puppy-ignorance, of course ) then you can consider it. Until then, I think it's unlikely for anything to be wrong with her, and don't even waste your time worrying

Is she totally pure white? If there are any patches of colour on her at all, then the chance of deafness is greatly reduced.
Also, as both parents are pied, not pure white, the chances are reduced still further!

I will be definatly looking out for signs and i've asked if she's behaving the same as her brothers and she's doing well aparently.
Caryll she's what I would conceder 'all white' she's got tiny speckles on her ears and toes but other than that she’s solid white.

Re: Health concerns for white puppy
All I'd sugest is get her in a quiet room & keep her occupied, then someone else drop something on the floor behind her- bunch of keys or something. Watch her reaction.

Re: Health concerns for white puppy
yes the same advice as caryll but also as caryll pointed out you have reduced the risks to a minimum that her parents are not both solid whites .
same with the skin conditions a minimum risk but you will still need to be carefull in summer with sunburn

Re: Health concerns for white puppy
I have a solid white dog and a mostly white staff and neither are deaf or suffer from skin problems.
Yes it's a higher risk in white dogs but it doesn't mean they are definitely going to be deaf or ill

Re: Health concerns for white puppy
Thanks all for the reassurance
I had hoped it'd be ok as she's not been super bread (white + white = white iykwim?)
I'll be testing her when she comes home, just to be safe (born worrier)
What is this word 'summer' you speak of? I'm in London so if the rays get through the smog, grime and filth i'll be too in shock to care.

Welcome
Google can be your worst enemy
Skin concerns/deafness is something to be mindful of but don't get to stressed over thinking pupster will definitely have them!

No, be aware, but not to the point of panic!
Chances are she'll be perfectly ok & will run rings around you in no time at all!!

Re: Health concerns for white puppy
Not to put a damper on it but if both parents were not health tested prior to breeding there could be hidden health concerns. I can't add anymore to the rest of this as its all been said really.

I will say however diet can have a huuuuuge impact. As Ella said her dogs have no issues but she feeds raw which is vastly better than kibbles.
