Is she too old to train?
I know this is going to sound daft as Louby is only 7 months old, and we have had her for about a month. But she is proving hard to train. She has no manners, will jump up all the time, wether you are standing, sitting, eating and even peeing!!!
She is proving hard to toilet train too. We took her in from being a stray, so dont really know what she has come from, i think she was kept in a garden so hasnt learned manners etc.
My brother has a staffie who is only a few weeks old, and is doing so much better.
Is it like being a driver where you learn bad habits and its hard to get out of it??

Re: Is she too old to train?
I don't think Louby is too old, Cassie is 2 and we adopted her about 3 months ago, with the advice of all forum members we have managed to iron out most of her poor behaviours. And managed to teach her a nice thing or two. I am sure you will recieve loads of advice from people i consider to be knowledgable. The only thing i can suggest is look through all the past posts in training and behaviour, and you will find any kind of problem and the solutions there. Good luck and don't give up hope, the forum is here to support and don't forget staffs are so very intelligent

Rescue dogs can take a while to settle in to their new homes, but with patience and consistency she will improve!

Re: Is she too old to train?
I agree with the others with being patience and consitient. We've got 3 rescue dogs. None of them had any training when we got them. The oldest 2 were both 6 months and the younger one we rehomed last year when she was 2.
She hadn't even had any socialising ether and was terrified of everything and like yours was a stray. We still have some areas we need to work on with her. But she's a different dog to the one we brought home. It did take her along time to get used to the new envinment, routines and us before she was ready to do any real training. So I wouldn't worry if you've only had her a month. It is still early days.
Good luck and enjoy your new addition

Re: Is she too old to train?
No way is she too old. But puppies are a clean slate, so to speak; you can train them frm scratch, and they pick things up very easily. At 7 months old, she has a ton of bad habits from her previous home probably, so after her whole life getting away with things, she now has to learn that it's actually wrong. It'll take her longer. Not to mention, she's going through her teenage phase where their training goes mad anyway . Loki used to do anything for a treat, run back to me as soon as I called him, and do something as soon as I told him to. Now he prefers sniffing grass to treats, prefers sniffing grass to coming back to me and prefers to do things in his own time, as well as having terrible manners. So I'd say it's a combination of both. Just be consistent and you'll get there with her in time.

A dog is never too old to train, especially not a puppy! You just need to find the right motivation for the dog, as well as lots of patience!
