Tattoos
Hello,
I was just wondering if anyone has had their dog tattooed? i have a feeling it's common in the US and quite a few UK breeders (not jsut staffs) tattoo pups before they go to their new homes.
I've seen a Parsons Terrier with one of these and it's a stamp on the inside of one of their ears, a series of dots which make up a unique code. The idea behind it is that when dogs are stolen, it's possible to cut-out the microchip (horrid, I know). Obviously a dog then becomes re-saleable and can be fitted with a brand new chip, however, cutting off it's ear and the tattoo isn't an option for someone selling stolen dogs.
Now staffords aren't often stolen for resale, unless you're a dog-fighting scumbag but would it give you additional peace of mind if your dog ran away or was stolen? I've heard of chips moving around in the dog and becoming impossible to scan and chipped run-aways then end up at the pound because the chip had migrated.
Just wondering whetger it would be worth it?

Re: Tattoos
sounds like a good idea to me. I hope the chips dont move around though. Miley has a barrel tag with my mobile number on and she is chipped too. The barrel tag has already saved her once when she run off the park and ended up at an old peoples home near us. They rang me to tell me she was there. Very lucky really

Re: Tattoos
A lot of breeders here used to do it here before microchipping, I'm not sure if they still do. It's a good idea for added peace of mnd, unfortunately although they can't remove it, it can still be covered with more tattoos

Re: Tattoos
All GSDs that compete in Schutzhund or working trials are tattoo'd, and several gundog breeds. I'm pretty sure that greyhounds are also tattoo'd.
I like the idea of tattooing, although not in the ear as the people who steal dogs cut the ear off to get rid of the tattoo! GSDs are tattoo'd inside the ear flap & inside the back leg.

Well what about tattooing the inside of the leg. they cant really cut that off. cuz that would just be horrible if they had to cut the ear cuz of a tattoo

Re: Tattoos
Piggie sports a tat. Kinda sassy... no, it isn't a waste. Great way to ID as no scanner necessary like the chip.
