Extreme floor licking
Hey everyone
Bit of a strange one, Bruce has a habit of licking the floor or the glass patio door to the point he goes into a trance like state. Sometimes he will get sick he does it so much.
He did it from day one but we put it down to anxiety from his previous life, now he is in a loving home and he knows that but he still does it
Anyone know why he does this and anyway to stop this?

Re: Extreme floor licking
Done them all Dave even had a behavior trainer in.
She said it was extreme anxiety from his past life but his circumstances have changed so much and he is so happy but this behavior continues

Re: Extreme floor licking
I'd say it's OCD. A learned behaviour that's gone out of control. It may well have stemmed from his past, but it's now an Obsessive Compulsive Disorder - it's something he can't break himself.
Distraction is maybe the best way, but you'll have to find something so irresistable that he'll want to break the repetitive cycle! If there's nothing that will tempt him, then you may need to physically pull him away & offer something to him right in front of his nose. Use a trigger word when you do it ("stop" or "Enough" - whatever you want to use) and just repeat the action every time he starts to lick. It might take a long time and will maybe never totally stop, but hopefully you'll get to the stage where whenhe starts & you use the trigger word it'll stop him.

I'm sorry then I really don't know , maybe someone can help but all I can siuggest I ave already just keep him feeling secure.
We did have a BC cross that used to go round and round in circles from when we first got him , we assumed from being locked in small rooms, we had him about 6 /7 years and he still did it up to his last days in this world but much less. We knew we had given him a happy life we could do no more

Re: Extreme floor licking
Hi, I'm not sure what i have is of much use but I have heard of it before, an anxious state reflex that has become habit, I'm also pretty sure Victoria Stilwell covered it on one of her episodes (maybe have a look on you tube?), it involved a dog that licked shiny surfaces, glass, oven door etc and chased reflections, but would get almost bewitched by it. I think they used a blocking technique every time the dog started the action, either physically backing the dog away or removing it from the room. It was also given a very strong "Ah", and it takes time, timing and consistency.
Good luck, i'm sure others on here will have other ideas to try.

Re: Extreme floor licking
Does sound like it's become an obsessive habit. I don't really have any advice, but what Caryll and Kelpie said sound good. It might never completely go away, but if you can get to a point where you can distract him from it, it'll be much better for you all. Hope it goes well
