10 week old puppy biting/nipping

Hi my 10 week old baby staff keeps biting/nipping when we play with her, sometimes it's a lot harder than others.
Just wondering how long it's taken your puppy to stop with the play biting? Also is there a sign i can look out for when she's been aggressive rather than playing? I feel as though i shout at her all the time saying NO! and feel bad in case she just see's it as playing! any info appreciated thanks lisa

You will not experience aggression in a pup just excitement. How old was she when you got her ?? Tommy still gets very excite now and uses teeth first at 7 months but more to hang on to your clothes First try a good firm NO (not shouting just firm) next is to turn around and ignore her and she learns the behaviour doesn't get her rewards. I admit Tommy has been much harder to get across to than Tilly (we taught her ah ah tongues not teeth) , but Tommy now if you are at his level he will just lick you violently > when you are stood up this is when he will jump and nip

Ok that's good to know, she was 6 and a half weeks when we got her so were thinking maybe it's because she hasn't had a lot of time to learn how to control her bites from her other litter mates/mum.
Thank you for your advice she's a lovley girl and very clever we have been doing some clicker training and she's taken to it brilliantly
I know she's still very young and i'm sure she will get better with age!

You are right there, 6 weeks (someone correct me if I'm wong) is when they start to learn bite inhibition. Just use Daves advice, be consistent and it will improve

Yes that's the word i was looking for bite inhibition I have researched a fair bit on it. I am taking her to some puppy socialisation classes and hoping this may help

Fact is all puppies are nippers at that age and yes the pups age when you got her is a big contributor . Tilly , as I say was very easy to sort , Tommy has proved to be more difficult . We took Tommy from the breeder at our request at 7 weeks and 2 days as due to things coming up , holidays etc it was a better time to take him as opposed to waiting to 8 weeks and it being a little more hectic ( he was totally independent by then). Generally the decision worked well for most reasons but always wonder if that little extra nippiness was just down to the sake of them few days

Maybe, the thing is we will never know our dogs could of left there mothers at 8/9 weeks and still been little nippers! as you said most puppies do nip and i'm sure in time most dogs do grow out of it.

Was also thinking she may calm down slightly when she can go for walk and have more exercise? Her second jab is tomo so only 2 more weeks to wait and we can take her for a little walk, will have to teach her to walk on the lead first though!

That's a good point, Dave, we got Loki when he was around the same age as Tommy when you brought him home, and Loki still bites at times now. Only when VERY excited and wild, but still, perhaps it would've made a difference. But Loki is a devil, so I doubt it in my case

Anyway, it was ages before I noticed Loki wasn't constantly chewing and biting, so it definitely took a lot of patience. At her age she is just playing, so no worries about that, just be consistent with your training methods and she'll get the hang of it. Maybe not as quick as you'd like but still eventually.
