according to my gp you only need extra vitamins iron etc when you become deficient. He said we all get enough vitamins from our food so no need for any extra

Just a few days before you give blood will help up the levels. The main thing is to take them with orange juice and don't drink coffee. The orange juice massively increases the amount the body absorbs and the coffee will stop your body from absorbing the iron.

I take them just before Steve cos my iron levels are always on the border for giving blood. They not low for me but you need higher levels as you lose iron when giving blood. SO I just take them about 4 days before and since doing that I have always had high enough levels. Also take them for 3 days after as it helps recovery

Just be aware that taking iron tablets can upset your stomach!

When we need them I buy the Ferrous Sulphate tablets from Boots or Superdrug pharmacy. They're cheaper & stronger than the piddling things you get on the vitamin tablets shelf.
