Irish Blue
I wonder if people can shed some light on this? when ever i talk about staffs to people and i say what colour Cassius is why do people always say "Irish Blue". Is there such a term?

Re: Irish Blue
No, people who refer to any type of Irish staffs etc are most likely numptys who like to breed large staffs and pretend they are pitbulls, or are crossbreeds bred to look like pitbulls. The irish "blue" is a prefered colour.

Re: Irish Blue
but where does the "irish" term come from? i'd love to turn round and say, "there's no such thing as an Irish Blue, it's just blue" but i want to be 100% sure. i've had like 3 or 4 people say "oh yeah irish blue"

Re: Irish Blue
the irish term comes from people who decided to cross staffs and breed them to be larger than normal staffords so they looked like pitbulls but were still technically "staffordshire bull terriers"
dog fighting is/was very popular in ireland among the lower classes, so they wanted better dogs that were not pitbulls cause pitbulls were very hard and expensive to buy so they made their own so to speak.

Re: Irish Blue
ah right, thanks for that. I do think it's like chinese whispers or if someone says its "irish blue"people pass that on to other people and so on. so any blue staff is deemed an "irish blue". personally i just prefer Blue.

Re: Irish Blue
i don't think it even started in ireland, bad breeder add irish to the staffy name so to make people who don't really know anything about the breed they getting a new or different type of staffy but in 99% of the time they just getting a crossbreed and but paying silly amount of money for one, i wouldn't pay over £100 for one. most os these dog are pitbull type dogs which are banned in the uk

That's about it!
There's no such breed as an Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier - not a recognised one, anyway! Irish Staffordshire Bull Terrier is a name that was coined to make a pitbull legal! There are blues in both breeds, though, so why they automatically think that a blue is Irish, I've no idea!

Re: Irish Blue
ok Hayley, i will do in future now i know the term is non existent.
for the record when i bought mine he wasn't sold with the term "Irish blue". it was only after i bought him and spoke to people that term was mentioned? hence why i asked.

Well you make sure you do challenge them , he's a little beauty and shouldn't be associated with these loose terms, if someone says he is an Irish Blue you can also be sure they really know 0 about the Staffys

Re: Irish Blue
I met a woman over the aerodrome about a month ago, who had a blue staff bitch, and she told me that she was an Irish staff...
I said 'oh, I didn't think there was such a thing' and the OH dragged me away moaning at me for trying to argue with the woman who 'clearly knew what breed her dog was'.
I have to say, I wasn't 100% sure so I didn't enter into a discussion with her - I'll only do that if I know I'm right!! HA!

He was a big time pit bull breeder and when they became banned, he started breeding cross breeds to look like them, set up the IKC so the dogs could be registered and have IKC paper work instead of the proper KC paper work you get with a full breed dog.

Re: Irish Blue
It's just a way to make their dogs sound rarer than they are so they can sell them at more money, when in reality they're worth less money (in terms of breed, I mean) because they're crosses. I had someone in Pets At Home ask if Loki was an Irish Staff because he's big for his age...though in his case I think he was implying if he was a pitbull . So it's not just blue Staffs that get it.
