Hello - I'm new to the group!
Hi everyone
I have just joined the group - mainly because I am seeking advice! I have a 2 year old rescue staffy cross that we have had for over 18 months - she is good as gold and very friendly - children, dogs, adults - everyone loves her!
We recently decided to look at fostering or adopting another dog and fell for a 6 yr old male staffy at the local rescue centre - history is patchy but aparently good with children and dogs. We have met him a few times and I took Edie to meet him yesterday. He seems pretty steady but did display some dominant behaviour and made afair bit of noise! - I think much of it was play as Edie is also very playful and loves a good wrestle! Over the last 18 months I have seen Edie wrestle with everything from staffies to german shepherds and all sorts inbetween but when you do not know the history of a dog is it understandable to be a little anxious?!
We all love Jimmy (the prospective dog) - I have paid the deposit and we're getting home-checked on thursday but comments from friends and then reading on the web about bringing an adult rescue staffy into a home with children (we have 3 boys between 7&10yrs) and a resident dog is giving me the heeby jeebies!
Jimmy apparently lived with children in his previous home - the rescue centre won't tell me why he was brought in to be re-homed but they have said that he did kill a kitten/cat at his last home. I'm not letting that put me off because no cats dare set foot in our garden after having a resident dog for the last 15 years!
Can someone please reassure me that adopting Jimmy is the good idea that we think it is?! How long does it take for a dog to settle after being re-homed and should I bring him home as soon as we've passed our home-check or wait until we've had a few more visits / walks with him and Edie and the boys? I've seen a lot of chat about crates on different sites - not really a fan of crates but am interested in the experiences of others in this area! HELP!
Thanks!

Re: Hello - I'm new to the group!
I would walk them together a few times and get something with the new dogs scent on it to bring it home so your current dog can get used to the smell. Make sure to walk them before getting into the home and don't pay more attention to the new dog. All dogs are a little different on how long they take to settle. I would not leave them alone unsupervised for awhile and it would be best if someone could be at home at all times at least the first week or so.

Hello and welcome from me and the kids , as J says , take a little time in making sure. I wouldn't be concerned about the cat experience , they are dogs and don't always get along and you don't know the circumstances. Most important is that you are comfortable with him and so is your existing dog

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me.
Agree with the above, take them out for a couple of walks together to see how things go. It should all be OK. Please let us know how things go.

Re: Hello - I'm new to the group!
Thanks all - so nice to hear from people who love bull terriers and don't think Jimmy is likely to rip anyone's throat out just because he's a SBT! I thought I was prepared for the anti-bully lobby with some reactions to Edie (people lifting their dogs up to shoulder height - I kid you not!) because she looks like a tall slim version of a staffy but show folk a pic of Jimmy (big butch white with a brindle eye and ear) and even one of my friends has asked "what if he attacks my dog?" (who happens to be a huge 35kg dalmation with an attitude problem with every dog except my Edie!) ~sigh~ the media has a lot to answer for. However my faith in the staffy has been reinforced by reading various posts on this site - I can see I will be a regular visitor! I'm visiting Jimmy again with Edie on thursday for a walk so will update then. Thanks again! C

Re: Hello - I'm new to the group!
Hi & welcome.
Not a lot I can add to what's already been said. I'd recommend a crate, mainly because if the exuberant playing gets too much you may have to seperate them for a while!
I take it your boys have met Jimmy? If so, and they get along well then I can't see a problem. I would advise you to tell your boys to give Jimmy a bit of space for a couple of weeks to help him settle down, though. No rough play, no hugging etc.
Good luck!
