New Members with hair thinning issues....
Good evening one and all pooches.
This is our first login into this website / forum and we are looking for advise and guidance from all you staffy owners.
We have a blue female staff who is 1 year old in a few days. We have been having problems with hair thinning around the back of the ears and neck area. She did come out in what can only be described as little bumps. she scratched them until they bled and just as they formed a scab she would scratch the area again and open up the wound, hence we had a vicious circle, we took her to the vets who prescribed antibiotics and anti allergy tablets, they did not seem to help, we applied hydrocortisone cream to the area amongst a variety of other creams one after the other to heal it, the only thing that seemed to help her scabs heal was tea tree oil diluted in water and applied to the back of the ears with cotton wool pad an we brought baby socks to put on her at night times as this was the times she seemed to scratch. now she has no infected areas or scabs at all she just looks rather bald around the back of her ears and thinning of the neck area. On reading the other comments on here its sounds abit like mange, we have spoken to the breeders who recommended we use benzyl benzoate ointment for hair thinning, we are currently doing this and maybe it is just a case of being patient and waiting for her hair to regrow, just wondered if anybody has any other ideas? she could not have mites/fleas etc as she has advocate applied every month without fail.
many thanks lewis

Hi, welcome to the forum.
Did the vet do a skin scrape to rule out demodectic mange?

Hi and welcome to the forum from Rocky and me
Have you tried speaking to another vet for a second opinion. I think they would normally do some kind of skin scrape to ID the cause of the irritation.

Re: New Members with hair thinning issues....
as steve pointed out omega3 can help but i wouldn't worry unduelly about the balding patches you have mentioned as there are a few members that have mentioned these places .some are even total bald from neck to full underbelly which causes no problems and not caused by any medical problems just the way they are (feel sorry for them when its cold)

Re: New Members with hair thinning issues....
Thanks for your replies, we have not tried omega 3 tablets, thats worth a try, we have been told that salmon oil is meant to be good for this type of problem too? we didn't have skin scrapes done, this was the next step after the tablets were prescribed if they didn't work. however the irritation has gone now she has just the hair thinning problem. we were put off having scrapes done as we have other breeds of dogs in the family who have had skin complaints, one which had all the scrapes done and they were told they have a pollen/dust mite allergy which nothing can be done for and also another family member who has spent hundreds trying different shampoos/foods/tablets you name it and also had scrapes done, and they still don't know what it is. this has put us off because we are worried that as soon as we inform the vets we have insurance they will convince us to have everything under the sun done.
if this can be treated by something simple as fish oil etc or a cream/ointment brought in the shops it would save alot of money and save stress on poor freya having all these horrible scrapes done as she hates the vets :-(

Re: New Members with hair thinning issues....
I understand what you're saying about vets/insurance. I'm lucky, my vet will always avoid unnecessary expense for me (or my insurance policy!) but I know they're not all like that.
You would have to be strong & refuse anything you feel is not needed. Ask about each proceedure suggested and make your own decision. Obviously our vets have years of training behind them & we have to listen to them, but we also have to make decisions ourselves based on common sense & the knowledge that we know our pets better than them.
So, listen, question, research (if you're still not sure) and then decide.
