Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
After a while of trying different things we took Millie to the vet as things were getting worse. After skin scrapes she was diagnosed with Demodex.
Now we have to use Paxcutol shampoo, Aludex wash and she is on antibiotics too. Also Advocate once every two weeks. I really wish we hadn't bought from a private breeder now

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Poor Millie she does look poorly.
Sophie was diagnosed with Demodex when she was about 13 weeks, the vet put her on Promeris Duo which worked for her.
Thankfully apart for a fear of rubber gloves which we used to put the Promeris on with she is now ok.
We hope Millie gets better soon.

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Why on earth did you let it get so bad?
It's nothing to do with the breeder, all dogs have the demodectic mite, but sometimes, say if their immune system is a little down, they get out of hand.

When we first tried treating her, she was no where near looking like this. it is very decieving, one we started on the washes, the fur literally fell out of places that appeared ok. Rest assured, we all love Millie and would never hurt her.

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
No, I'm sure you wouldn't do anything to hurt her! Just surprised that you didn't at least ask on here if she was getting a bit patchy.
Not to worry, the washes etc will soon put her right!

Hopefully, at first we thought it was down to the soil in the garden as she was always digging.

Why did you say you wished you hadn't gone to a private breeder?
Guest- Guest
Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Because, I know of at least three other people who bought from the same breeder and all pups have Demodex. As far as I was led to believe, this condition is hereditory. The breeder also insisted that the dogs were OK to be taken at 4 weeks old.

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Hmmmm. Pups should never leave their siblings at 4 weeks old. Yes, sometimes demodex is hereditary - if that's the case, the bitch should never be bred from again.
How old is Millie now?

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Blimey.
Well Demodex is a mite that all dogs have, they are born with it. It only becomes an issue if ur pup or dog has a compromised immune system that isn't developed enough to keep the mites at bay.
If u got ur girl at 4wks then I'm not surprised...7-8wks is minum to leave mum and siblings, so much is learnt from the litter.
If only ud known this forum bk then !
Shocking what breeders get away with these days

It can be a hereditary problem - yes, they all have mites, but some bitches do pass on severe demodex & if that's the case they should never be bred from again.

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Millie is six months now, a well loved family dog, walked everyday kept clean and safe and properly fed. I didn't mean anything by terming private breeders, maybe I should have said 'This particular private breeder'. Thankyou all for you kind comments, Millie seems to be doing well with her meds and cheering up a bit (plenty of fuss and treats). Hope we clear this messy coat up for her soon

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
We have a red point siamese boy who has a skin problem which is caused by allergies and has to be medicated every day. I can sympathise with you as i know how distressing it is for both you and your pet when there is a flair up.
Although Rufus' condition is pretty much under control, if he manages to spit out his medication we can get a relapse and occasionally have to put a buster collar on him to stop him licking it raw.
Hope it clears up soon. >< ><

Making progress...
After 4 weeks of treatment after advice from the vet, we are starting to see good results. I am doing her weekly baths myself.

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
Thanks for replies, she had a skin scrape again yesterday and it only showed positive on one of the five samples and then only one mite that was still alive, so here's hoping for an 'all-clear' in a fortnight...

She's looking so much better. As I said in an earlier reply, we have a cat with skin problems and it is so upsetting seeing a pet in discomfort.
Hope she continues to improve.
Hugs from Bacchus. ><

Hows she doing? Looking so much better in that last pic.
Out of curiosity how many weeks of aludex washes did your vet recomend?
Moll has now had 4 and it affects her so much. She has all the horrible side effects listed on the bottle...lethargy, sickness, depression. Horrible stuff!

I feel your pain my late dog jessa was rescued by me after she was neglected, her skin around her eyes were bleeding at the time and she was just so itchy, she ended up at the vets monthly and on steroids and lots of potions till the die she died of old age.

Millie had washes with Aludex but after reading about other dogs and how they responded, I decided to give her a third of the strength dosage as it was horrible stuff. I think to be fair it is the way you wash the dog IE with a mitt for 10 minutes scrubbing it in rather than a sheep dip approach. I gave her six washes in total weekly and now she has a Paxcutol bath followed by Advocate shot once a month. Hope you go on ok with yours

Wow she looks great! Roxy has demodex and is also breaking out in bumps that come ago - (does that sound right?!) She's had three shampoos and dips so far and the sores are healing, but the bumps are pretty odd. So glad Millie is on the mend!

Yes it does, the bumps and leathery swollen skin took quite a while to sort themselves out. We didn't expect her fur to grow back as quick as it did but that's just a bonus.
Are you doing the shampooing and wash yourself or are vets doing it?

Re: Millie is poorly....Demodex :(
We're doing the wash and dips ourselves, apparently we have to do that once a week for three months, and she gets an insecticide via syringe twice a week.
The bumps are the worry - she's been on two sets of antibiotics.
