Re: just had a argument with my dad
i know an alcoholic on benefits. he drinks from opening til about 1 or 2, goes home for a take away (chip shop or whatever) sleeps til 5, goes to shop and gets a bottle of cider drinks that, then goes to the pub from about 9-closing. Every night. So there are people who manage it!

Re: just had a argument with my dad
yea but this is about going to the pub all day there no way a person on benefits could do that.

Did you reverse back over it to make sure he was ok? To be fair he would probably just claim against you on free solisiters, and you'd end up owing him ££££!
We live in a very wrong world. I know it is my fault I didn't have the best insurance for Moo, but some how, working my * off I will find the money needed. Be it nearly stressing myslef to death in the mean time and on the verge of loosing my job as my head is else where.
Shame I'm not on benefits, I'd get the treatment for free! Oh and my house, and bills.........................

Re: just had a argument with my dad
Most certainly are doing something dodgy , including not paying bills or feeding their kids and claiming for everything possible they can . If someone is going to claim benefits and then decide the best place for them is the pub then it is quite obvious they are extremely dodgy with no sense of responsibility whatsoever.
And I'm going to go to the doctors and claim my alcohol benefit as a way of getting my tax back , reckon my blood and my liver will back me up no problem

Re: just had a argument with my dad
Sad to say a lot of my family and friends back home are on benefits and they live a much richer lifestyle than I ever have, and I've worked and paid my way since the age of 15 when I left school! So many of them are at the pub every day, and have widescreen TV's and a few cars.. but a lot also keep popping out children for the council to fund and keep them in the same dirty clothes.. therefore spending more money on themselves. Makes me sick how slack the UK is.

Re: just had a argument with my dad
sorry no one on benefits have good life's there no way on this earth someone on benefits can sit in a pub all day.... if you know someone who does then they are selling drugs or doing some dodgy, to say people benefits have much better life then people who work you must be having a laugh!
Re: just had a argument with my dad
I can't imagine that all of my family are selling drugs lol! An old friend of mine had a 3 bedroom private rented house with a garden, a dog, now has four children (2 of which were in childcare for 5 days a week) her and her boyfriend both have cars, big televisions, all of the newest consoles, and go out for big nights out 2-3 nights a week; I've never known either of them to work a day in their lives. And I spent most days with them as I looked after the children for a lot of the time.. and knew where they were 99% of the time and neither were doing anything shady, they just rinsed the council for everything that they could.
Where as I was working up to 60 hours a week and could barely afford a one bedroom flat, can't afford to drive and could only just afford food for the month. Just talking from personal experience

Re: just had a argument with my dad
I grew up poor on a council estate and didn't enjoy the feeling of living off of others hard earned money, so I'd prefer not to, thank you. I worked my * off and changed things for myself, but I'm still broke! I understand of course that some people simply cannot work for various reasons, and I have no issue with them getting help of course, but so many can and choose not to because of the easy lifestyle that it brings. Just being honest!

Re: just had a argument with my dad
I'm not claiming that about everybody on benefits of course, I've not met every person in the world on benefits and wouldn't make that generalization. As stated previously, just giving examples from personal experience

Re: just had a argument with my dad
All good points but how many of these people having the good life are people on benefits and also taking at least 45% of ex-partners wages supposed to be for the children but pays for the ex and her new fella to enjoy life? AND yet we are still expected to clothe the children when they visit and send the clothes home when they leave? sorry rant over

I'm not really sure that I understand it. Surely, that money would be better spent helping the person get rid of the alcohol problem!

i want to see proof of a alcohol benefit, i cant see it myself
well the topic not about what people can claim it's about people not having a great life on benefits and people who think they are believing to much on what other people say to them, only people who as it good are people who does something dodgy while claming benefit.

Re: just had a argument with my dad
Hmm. I read an article about it just now, which outlines benefits given to those who are dependent on alcohol or drugs. The general idea seems to be that the W.H.O. sees alcoholism as a disease which could be due to genetic defects, so the benefits are given to people whose alcohol dependence interferes with their ability to work.

It does seem very surprising that people manage to go out on drinking days when they're on benefits, I'll admit. Then again, I don't know much about it.

Re: just had a argument with my dad
How much money would somebody generally get on benefits?
Guest- Guest
Re: just had a argument with my dad
to sit in a pub all day then you would need £££ a lot more then you could ever claim. When i go out normally 6pm to early hours in the morning i could spend £60/70 depending where i go, so if you drink all do you would need at least £100 plus there no way anybody is going to get £100s a week to drink in a pub.
Re: just had a argument with my dad
Thats why half of them used to drink at the club for £2.20 a pint!

Re: just had a argument with my dad
Just a small thought, I live on less than what benefits pay after you take out my taxes, rent and mortgage. Oh and when I was sacked from a prior job (unfair dissmal) I couldn't even sign on as I wasn't eligible, and housing benefit offered me £10 p/m!
Work that one out.

Re: just had a argument with my dad
I will point this out drinking in a pub all day you would need i about 20/30 pints plus a day
say at £2.2o for a pint
20 pints x £2.20 = £44 x 7 days = £308
25 pints x £2.20 = £55 x 7 days = £385
30 pints x £2.20 = £66 x 7 days = £462
see impossible

How much?
If you're aged 16-24 you receive £56.25 a week
If you're aged 25 or over you receive £71 a week
