Was wondering when it would happen
Had our first bad experience on our walk tonight We went on our usual weeknight walk along the same route, I have noticed other night a cranky old dog outside a house nearby, looks like an old mastiff cross (But we all know how great I am at breeds ) anyway usually he is off lead in the front yard but his owner is always with him and when he sees us he calls his dog and it always goes to his side..We always walk on the other side of the road as his owner made comment that his dog is very protective of his yard..Tonight the dog ws again off lead in the front yard, but the owner with his head under the bonnet and the dog ran straight across the road, in front of a car and bit my little girl right on her back Luckily the car that nearly hit the dog was my neighbour, who stopped to help me, and with all the commotion the dogs owner realised what was going on and called his dog back.. The nerve of him though, he GIGGLED and said I told you he was protective.. I aced up and gave him a piece of my mind, my neighbour put Steff in his car and drove us all home.. Only now have I discovered that she has 1 little puncture wound on her back I have bathed it and dissinfected it, it isn't deep.. I will keep an eye on it and try to keep it clean, is there anything else I need to do??
Sorry for the rant guys, think I'm still a little shocked

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
I know.. I have read so many stories on here like this and always wondered how I would react if it ever happened to me.. It is something always in the back of my mind when out on walks.. Now that I've calmed down a bit I guess we were lucky, that dog is a lot bigger than Steff he could have done real damage if he wanted to.. I think he was just giving us a warning to stay away, he could have snapped her in half if he wanted to..

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
The owner should have been watching, no good giggling, if he knows he has a guarder then it's up to him to act accordingly! I'm sure you tore a good strip off him though. Can't believe he didn't say sorry or express upset, I would be mortified if that were me.

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
I think that is what annoyed me the most is that he giggled If he had just said sorry I wasn't watching, or showed any kind of remorse or concern for Steff, me or my 9 yr old son maybe I would have been angry but would have held it together.. It's kinda funny now that master 9 keeps mimicking me when I abused him and then laughs and says "I thought you were gonna punch him Mum"

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
That's bad but least Steffi isn't too bad. I would've gotten angry at his finding it funny more than anything else. There's a protective Australian Shepherd in one of the front yards on the way to the field we walk Loki, he barks at every single dog that walks past, but he's on the other side of a gate, so he doesn't harm anyone. Simple things can solve problems.

Thats what peeved me off, giggle, and an "I told u so".. It was as if this attack was his entertainment for the night.. What does he expect everyone to do? stay away from his house altogether? He is on the main road and my house is in a cul de sac off that road.. I either have to walk past his house or walk half of our walk then turn around and walk back the same way we came.. Oh well like I said it wasn't as bad as it could have been, his dog could have easily snapped Steffi in half.. It's the owners that think this behavior is normal and just allow it to happen that's gets me mad..

Just keep an eye on the wound, it should be fine keep it clean, if you have any sudocreme just dab a little on to aid the healing process.

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
Poor thing, I hope she's ok. Puncture wounds often have a habit of becoming infected, so just keep an eye on it for the next couple of days.
Love it!

Thanks J She is acting normal again now after being a complete sook for a couple of hours.. The wound isn't bad so I'm sure she will fine, I just hope it dosen't affect her temperament and nature with other dogs

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
I would think about limiting her interaction with other dogs that you were unsure of for a couple of weeks just to make sure there isn't anthor incident that could affect her long term

the kind of owner i love to hate with a passion they have a big dog that can defend itself so they think they don't need to .
saddly they forget they need to keep there dog in check 100%of time no room for slip ups.
what a stupid reply (i told you he was protective of there yard)it diddnt happen on his bl00dy yard
hope steffi not affected by it from me and memphis

Thanks for the tip, sounds logical, maybe the safety of the local puppy play pen for a few weeks, she always has a good time there and its only for pups so not intimidating at all..

Thanks Wazza, that was my point exactly, I was across the other side of the "insert obscenity here" road!!! He told me his dog was protective and aggressive if another dog came onto the nature strip out the front of his house, so I stayed clear of his side of the road all together..

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
I would have informed the police and gone to a vets then handed the guy the vets bill , the dog is dangerous it has attacked your dog on the road it will attack others , Duke was attacked an hour ago by another staff off the lead a young chav owner im afraid, his excuse was he dont like pups DUH . i reported it to the park rangers who said they will deal with it , luckily Duck was unharmed but only because i stuck my boot across the staffy's chest and pushed her back .

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
I would definitely report it to the authorities... That man should be forced to keep his dog contained and controlled.
I probably would have bit the man and told him I was protective of my dog!

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
Would definitely report it, even now, so there is a record on file of you doing so, for when this dog bites another dog..or child! I carry a little bottle of vinegar with a strong sprayer, or a squirt gun and charge oncoming nasty dogs and spray their face, while yelling 'go home'. However, I do have years of experience protecting my pups from untrained, unsocialized dogs owned by morons. If you are not confident in doing that, try to get some experience with someone who is.

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
As a responsible staffy owner u need to be 1 step ahead of ur own dog and 2 steps ahead of anyone else's !
In my limited experience it's other ppls dogs that are the issue, how ppl can let their dog roam around a front yard is beyond me !
Its just not the done thing,
Anyway , hope ur furbaby is ok, keep an eye on the wound, should be ok but u never know xxx hugs

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
Thanks guys for all the advice, I understand what everyone is saying about reporting it, but from the stories I have read on here and other peoples stories, I think if we all reported everything we would spend most of our days at police stations and in courts reporting one thing or another about other dog owners.. Seems that there are many stupid, irresponsible out there

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
Horrible thing to have to witness ! Hope she's better soon and no ill effects on her
When my dog was attacked by 2 Rottweilers (luckily it was 1 at a time and the 2 didn't get her together) the vet gave us pain killers and antibiotics!

That sounds horrible Stu well she has a gunky eye this morning too so we are off to the vet soon, I will get her to check the wound while we are there,.

Re: Was wondering when it would happen
Making a report doesn't mean you have to press charges. It's good to just have a formal note that this dog has been known to be dangerous.
