Giving dogs Aspirin?
Ok so its an on going saga for the limp Moo has, again just when it had vanished, it has reappeared, I will take her back to the vets on Wednesday, but I have heard that Aspirin can help with strains, whats your opinion?

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
I don't think it is arthritis, it came on too quickly to be, just read so many conflicting opinions. I wouldn't be using it as a pain relief but its a good anti-inflam, obviously though I wouldn't give it to her if its bad, hence why I asked you lovely people your thoughts

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
right from what i can see asprin can be used on dogs but for short period and only under instruction from a vet there are a number of things that need to be looked at.
is your dog more than 18months old (check)
is your dog more than 2 pounds in weight(check)
does your dog eat raw food as they need the enzyme produced while eating raw to break down the aspirin as not to poison (the odd meaty bone enough for this so check)
and if you dog has had a history of stomach problems you should not use asprin( )

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Yes that is pretty much what I have read, I don't think the stomach problem would be an issue as that was an allergy, rather than stomach. Would you try it Big? Obviously it would only be tonight and tomorrow and I'll take her to the vets wednesday. Thanks for the answer Xx

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
one adult aspirin should be ok for a dog of 11 pounds in weight so i think if you stick to 1 tablet twice a day for a couple of days and see if you get results you will be fine

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
PS
ment to say will moo being around 50pounds you will be way under the recommended dose with 1 tablet so cant see any probblems

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
I have given her half a tablet which is 150mg, would it be ok to give her 300mg? Sorry to ask but my maths is really bad and I am trying to convert weight. She is 23kg so would 300mg be ok twice a day?

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
The only problem I had with giving aspirin to a dog was an upset tum with Bandit. Moo will be ok with one whole tablet, twice a day, but I wouldn't give any more & wouldn't give it for more than 3 days.
Also, if you're going to the vets on Wednesday, don't give her any that morning in case it clashes with any pain relief he gives you.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Thank you, what I have seen has been a little conflicting, and then the chemist wouldn't sell it to me as I mentioned it was for the dog, the next as I said it was for a child (baby aspirin? read thats what you give) said you can't give it to under 16's, my colleauge went for me in the end!, and then I saw a topic on the net that the limp turned out to be a tumor.
Just want her back to normal.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
I dont think I would risk giving a dog aspirin, as with us, just incase it does not agree with them. It can cause upset tummy as it does with me. Would air on the side of caution

Sorry to hear Moo is still limping. >< to you both. I wouldnt give my dog Aspirin, not all humans can take Aspirin, could be the case with dogs???
I was wondering about Devils Claw which is an anti-inflam too but more a natural course. Just dont know if dogs can take it. I am sure I think I did ask in a post somewhere ages ago but cant find it.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Janey, does your vet have a hydrotherapy pool, this may be good for Moo for when you cannot walk her.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Just in from work, the limp was visible this morning, and my friend (who has sat with her all day) said it was better than yesterday.
She is sleeping now, its all she seems to have done for the past 3 weeks, its breaking my heart.
I have 2 days off now but I think she'll definitely be going to the vets again, I just haven't a clue what it is, this time last week it had gone, I did a slightly longer walk with her last Thursday (still onlead) and was hoping that was the start of building them back up, but the limp was back come Friday.
I am worried sick it is something more sinister, but I don't understand that this time last week it was gone and now its back again.
She isn't in any pain, far from it, its very hard to stop her from bouncing when we pop out for toilets.
Whats the next step at the vets? Do you think they will pescrib different meds or will it be directly down the x-ray route?
I just want her back to normal, its very upsetting, and she must be so frustrated. Bless her she is such a great girl and is as good as gold, but its beginning to upset me now.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Oh poor Janey, I do feel for you.
My experience with vets is that they will x-ray if they can (and they will probably check with you first that you will cover the cost!) but at best that will rule out the things that are making you sick with worry.
Good luck Janey (and Moo OF COURSE) - keep us advised, we are all thinking of you both.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Just back from the vets, again they can't feel anything wrong, agreed that they don't think its arthritis so she is now on a 2 week course of Rimadyl (no more aspirin although I think that was helping) and if no improvement in 2 weeks it will be x-rays. Had a good chat with the vets about it, walks still limited for toilets only. All I can do is pray now that it heals.

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Thanks for the update Janey. 2 weeks' reprieve from the x-ray and the sedation that would probably involve.
Glad they've ruled out arthritis (that usually shows as stiffness when first getting up from rest and wears off with exercise, then comes back again after the next rest).
Does your vet have any idea as to what it might be?
Walks limited to toilets only for 2 weeks is going to be tough for you both - Good Luck with that

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Thanks Lynda, we have now done almost a month of no walks so another few weeks will be ok, she is very good about, kinda got used to it, that makes me sad, and she is getting porky.
2 weeks of this, and then x-rays it will be, the vet hasn't a clue tbh, a little like me. But it has put my mind at ease again, and fingers crossed for the next 14 days.
I am hoping by next year!! she will be back to norm. Xx

Well let's hope it doesn't take THAT long
But, going back a bit and forgive me if I've misremembered, but didn't this start when your dog-walker over-exercised Moo?
Guest- Guest
Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
No it had started about 9 days prior to that, I was having insurance issues, as mines so basic I wanted to change her to a better cover before I got her seen, but I couldn't wait bless her.
I think I may have over done it last week with a 20min walk, its nearly been a month of stopping in.
Vet said after 2 weeks, if it is better to increase the walk by 5mins, then 3 x 5mins walks a day, increase them to 10, over a matter of weeks, so to get her back to doing her usual romps its gonna take a good few weeks after these 2 weeks, I hope that made sense lol

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Oh that explains why you were so very cross with your dog-walker - Moo already had problems.
I was just wondering if it was a strained ligament or something similar.
Yes your vet's exercise regime does make sense, but will need you looking at your watch all the time.
Oh what a long haul this sounds for you - strength Janey, strength. ><

Janey, she'll be fine. She has the best mummy in the world to look after her!
Just think, in a few weeks you'll be more concerned about how the hell you're gonna get the weight off her!

Re: Giving dogs Aspirin?
Did you say you've been given Rimadyl? If you have, it's a cumulative effect & you often don't see improvement for about 36 hours. It's an anti-inflammatory (NSAID) and most anti-inflams build up their effects slowly so you should start to see a difference by tomorrow morning.
