Re: before/after first season
Hi Steve - this dilemma has exercised us all and has sometimes led to Heated Debates! If you type in Spaying, or Neutering, or Castration, in the search box at the top of the page, you will see some of the recent threads on this subject, and our various opinions. Unfortunately there is no "one size fits all" answer.

Yes, everyone has different views, and there are arguments for both. It is totally your choice when to have it done Xx

Re: before/after first season
I haven't spayed or neutered my 2.... But if I was going to
I wouldn't do it at least until after first season.
Or better still until the dog/bitch had stopped growing.
My vet who is awesome says 3mths after first season minimum.

Re: before/after first season
personally I waited until 3 months after Tilly's second season so she was around 18 months. Personal choiuce as there are arguments for and against and won't be drawn into it.
I think if you are not planning to have a registered dog and be a breeder then she should be done for the risk of her being caught but again nobody can force you

Re: before/after first season
This is one decision we didn't have to make thankfully, as Rocky is from a rescue centre that "does" all dogs and bitches before they are rehomed as a matter of course. Honestly do not know which way we would have gone if not.

Re: before/after first season
Molly is currently in her first season and we have had the same problems trying to decide what best. We got her as a rescue and definately intend to have her neutered at some point although whats the best point nobody can say! Our vets advice was to have her done before her first season, not even vets agree whats best!
She's recently turned into a right flusey with our male castrated dog Watson!! He tried it on a couple of times so they can't be left unsupervised etc but i do think he's rather bamboozled by the whole thing!

Re: before/after first season
Poor Watson, one confused doggie. Although as he's been castrated, no harm done (puppy-wise). Molly will be a floosey in season, she's looking for a sire for her puppies!
As you have the two living together, for the sake of future harmony, personally I would have her spayed when her season is over (too late to have her done before her first season, not that I agree with that - sorry vets!)
