"The mascot tradition stretches back to 1882 when the South Staffordshire Regiment was ordered to march with Lord Wolseley to Khartoum. They were on a train with their Bull Terrier Boxer when Boxer leapt from the moving train and was seen lying unconscious or dead at the site of the track. A few days later Boxer found the regiment at their camp 200 miles along the railway track and from then on the tradition of having a bull terrier continued."
My goodness that was one very determined dog to find the regiment again. Perhaps he hitched a ride with someone.
