Your opinions on rescues.
First topic message reminder :
Hi, I recently had a chat with someone who runs a rescue and would like your opinions please.
Firstly I was told we shouldn't consider a staffy as my wife and I have no experience of the breed even though I have had Dobermans,Boxers & weimaraner.
Secondly we live in a small village and the persons opinion was that the locals would not like one in the area even though you hardly ever see dogs and when you do they are on leads.
Thirdly this person can only walk theirs and they have had 30 years of experience in the early morning and late at night as to avoid other dogs as staffies are bread to fight and at some point they will attack other dogs and you can't get that out of them.
Fourthly we work shortish hours and I was told they cannot be left alone as they will become destructive.
I was also told to avoid general rescues as these people don't know the breed.
I want honest opinions, after that conversation I was left thinking I can understand why its so difficult to get people to rehome staffies and it felt like I was talking to someone who is against the breed to the point it was like you would read in the papers.
I had a friend who had a staffy and it was one of the best dogs I've met.

Re: Your opinions on rescues.
Battersea Dogs Home is one of the largest and successful rescue centres in the country, and they have no problems with homing Staffies with first time dog owners, and they give lots of back up support too. I do think that they like owners to have access to a garden, and not be out at work all day.

Glad you found a dog to share your lives with! Noodles is such a great name for a staffy cross! Can't wait to see photos.

Re: Your opinions on rescues.
Hi Dave I get were your coming from and I think B would be upset if she read this, we mustnt forget that some of the dogs coming into rescue have been through the worst cruelty imaginable or they need extra care and training. B makes them a promice that she will only home them in a forever loving home and there days will be happy ones You would be suprised by the amount of rescues that get brought back when owners realise some of the breed traits arise as they settle into the new homes and especially when other dogs and pets share the household.Dave wrote:Good post starling89 , if you read through it you will see I had a very similar kind of negative conversation with what we believe is the same person (obviously without naming them) Personally think she is a crazy mad woman that wants to keep all the staffys to herself > >
Takes all kinds and we can see generally that this is not the case
The work she does within rescue is tireless if ever you go to any north west show she will be there with raising money for rescue on her stall selling raffel tickets ect she is a lovely lady but will not put her beloved dogs at risk.
She has done the rescue for many many years and has a great success rate in matching dogs with potential owners but she will only rehome to multiple households if you have many years experience with the breed.
Not saying that you or anyone on here isnt Ive had the conversation with her myself and she told me to come back in a few years she is very harsh but her heart is in the right place and her love of the breed unconditional

Well ok Gem you may have a different experience to me but I will stand by my words and she has to learn to be a little less harsh and more understanding rather than just making judgements over a phone call. OK maybe these action s have prevented a few staffs being mishomed but I daresay there have been equally as many if not a lot more that have missed out on the great home they could have had

This food is available on line, check the link below to compare prices at different places, some with free delivery which may be helpful. Had a quick look and doesn't appear to get great reviews, but you cant always go by that I guess.

Re: Your opinions on rescues.
Hi Kathy, Dr Johns is not what I would choose to feed, hopefully I will gradually be able to change him over to a good food. I don't want to unsettle him to much all of a sudden.

Sally my wife says he keeps looking at us as much to say is this for real am i actually staying. After about 10mins in each house he just lays down but keeps a eye on us all the time.

Re: Your opinions on rescues.
Mint or ginger would be good for clearing up a bit of wind. If you can hold of some ginger chews these are great for upset tummies too and available from a health food store:

These are not specifically for dogs but we do give a little piece to Rocky when needed.
