my Dogs Legs help really worried Empty my Dogs Legs help really worried

Post by mika03 Sun Jan 23 2011, 21:37

It all stared 4 weeks ago we walkedmika on a beach she let out a massive yelk and cocked left back leg up hobbling on it for a while then she would be fine walk normal. she has been doing this for past few weeks the first week we took her to the vet they could not find nothing wrong with the leg no breaks sprains etc.

Now today we had her running around a field back leg cocked up again then both legs dragging them with her as she runs then collapses both of them then she was fine as anyone got any idea why this is happening or experienced i with there dogs she does not seem to be in pain and the vet can not find anything wrong....I'm really worried ..

After today with her dragging both legs, I'd get her straight to the vet tomorrow and tell them there's definitely something wrong. For her to be dragging her back legs like that, there's def a problem that needs sorting. I've never come across it, but if it was my boy, I'd be straight back to the vets. Let us know how you get on.

Moo hops on her back legs occasionally, and I'll tell her to walk properly and she will, but has never dragged them. I think I would pop to the vet again.

Dizzy used to do something similar to this when she was a pup, she would yelp and limp or her back legs would collapse for a while, then she would seem absolutely fine. When I fisrt took her to the vets they thought it was spinal but they ran some tests and it turned out she had a luxating patella (her kneecap was dislocated, it's a very similar injury to what a lot of footballers experience). My vet said that because she is a staff and they have such a high pain tolerance it can be quite difficult to diagnose any problems with lameness as they do not react the same was as any other breed would do.
I would get her to your vets tomorrow if possible, if they still can't find anything maybe ask for a second opinion?
Hope you get her sorted x

She was somewhere between 7-10 months, can't remember exactly. She had an op on it to put the kneecap back into place then the ligaments were shortened to hold it. She is going to be 7 in March and so far (touch wood) she has never had any further problems with it.
Let us know how Mika gets on x

Could be patella luxation or possibly something as simple as a strained back.

I'd ask the vet if he could try x-raying to be sure. If nothing shows on the x-ray, you'll probably need to give her complete rest for a month just to totally recover. Not easy, but may be essential.

Id be interested to know how you get on. Logan is going for a scan on Wednesday because he's not walking 'properly'. He kicks his front paws up. I took him to the vet twice about it and they said not to worry, then i took him back last week with the runs and they said he needs a refferal for a scan on his spine to see if there is a problem!
I hope Mika will be ok! Smile

Getting a video would be a good idea, even if it's just a rubbish one from a phone, like Caryll said, it could be something as simple as a strained back.

Let us know how you get on!

Because it was at the beach, could it have been a jelly fish sting?

I am not a vet but I would be rather upset if it was only 4 weeks ago and they did not mention the knees. I would wait and see what the specialist says tomorrow and then decide what to do, that is just my opinion and I am sure you will do what is best for you and Mika. I cannot imagin how you are feeling at the moment but just see what the specialist says.
