Now I've had a lil tipple..

I shall have a little whinge bout the conversation I had in the vets, I found myself quite indignant but I hope I made my points on behalf of our lovely staffs everywhere. Below is the rough transcript!

So..lady in the vets eavesdropping my conversation with the vet as I waited for them to bring Dex out to me.

"Have you rescued your dog then? what kind is he?"

Me "he's a stafford"

Lady *wrinkled nose* "I don't like staffies"

Me (instantly annoyed trying to hide it) "Have you lived with one?"

Lady "oh no...my nan had one and it wasn't very nice"

Me "Aw, not all dogs are nice usually through no fault of their own cos not all owners are nice - it's nothing to do with the dog having been a staffie is it really"

Lady "They do have a bad reputation though"

Me "No. Irresponsible breeding and irresponsible ownership and incredibly bad journalism has created problems for the breed. You should see how many lovely dogs are in rescue, it's heartbreaking"

Lady "I just don't like them"

Me (inside my head) "How the hell can you decide you dislike every dog of a type based on one dog you didn't get along with you bloody facist! I wouldn't like yorkies or german shepherds or poodles based on that logic!!!"

Me "That's a shame, they are very special dogs"

I am so sick of hearing rubbish. Is this the price you pay for knowing the truth about these doggies?

I think you tend to grow a thick skin, and tbh all the ones who are off with Moo, are generally evened out by the many people I meet who love her

Some people just read what they want to hear or a friend has told them so it must be true, they say ignorance is bliss but tbh people like that i just ignore and laugh when they're precious handbag dog bites em >

I'd have just told her its her problem not mine and walked off , I just scowl at the people who scowl at me and smile at the ones that smile

Don't know why you refer to her as 'lady' in your post! I could think of another way of describing her!

It never ceases to amaze me how people think they can say negative things about your dog. If I was wearing a jumper they didn't like I'm sure they wouldn't say 'I don't like that jumper.' They would just keep quiet out of politeness. Why dogs are any different I don't know!

I will learn to take no notice I guess in time. It shocks me because somehow over the years I remained oblivious to the bad reputation the breed was being tarred with. I have always loved them, always hoped I could have a staffie companion so it's all very strange for me. I think I must have blocked out the white noise of the press and public opinion, I could not have had a dog up until now as we were working so much when the kids were smaller..and I think it would have broken my heart to hear the things we do let alone see how many suffer. I shall shake it off next time, instead of wanting to shake the ignoranamus spouting at me.

Jo, yeah I was doing her a kindness thinking about it!

Really p!ss's me off actually ... how ppl seem to think they have a right to tell "us" (staffy owners) what they think of our breed ... I wonder if they feel as empowered to tell the owners of other breeds the same ????

I love all dogs, but there are quite a few I dont particularly like that much, tho I wouldnt dream of saying it to an owner .... what are you supposed to say to someone that says something like that about your precious pet ......

The only remotely judgmental thing someone's said to me is a woman in the puppy training classes with a Jack Russell. She was like "oh, I heard a TERRIBLE story in the news the other day about Staffs, it's a shame some breeds are just like that." The woman in charge of the classes decided to point out the Jack Russells' less endearing qualities in defence of Staffs . Shame for her really, her puppy ended up loving Loki and running over to play with him . Just learn to educate those that can be, and ignore those that are stuck in their ways.

Perfectly said mate. Was gonna post my view but you expressed it much better

I know, what I will add, is you will grow a thick skin. I have, I just smile at those that give me a dirty look, they hate it! Heres one example, on saturday just gone, me and Pixee were walking down the canal, there was a boat moored up, 3 people were walking back to it with shopping bags, well theres a dog that Pixee loves saying hello to on the other side of the canal whenever we go that way, the other dog always pops his head into the window to say hello back , so as you can expect, Pixee went running down the canal under the bridge whining and stood barking till her friend popped up in the window, the looks I got off them 3 when they saw Pixee was a Staffie, I just smiled, oh boy they that rattled them , as I called Pixee on, we walked slowly pass their canal boat, Pixee having a good sniff here and there, I just stood there smiling at her, then smiled at them 3, their faces were like thunder by then, so I laughed, I couldnt help it, and called Pixee on, to which she did, that showed them! I got a good doggie that did as told, and well behaved too.

That's the way to counter it, Lynn!

And i suppose her pet sat perfectly not making a sound? lol

Me to as far as I can, however, if they try to impose that ignorance on me .. I cant let it slip I'm afraid .. and they will here my veiw in return >

I will try, told oh I'm going to bite my tongue next time if I can...he looked dubious about my ability to do that

Will see how we go, people on the school run are doing less ducking and dodging as we go past and more smiling so that's good! Silly folks.
