Cross posting this from another (non-staffy) forum.....

rawhide - Rawhide - a warning... Ady7yvy8

I never give rawhide to my dogs, anyway, but I hope this will make other people a little more wary of it!

Shocking, saw it on Facebook earlier. Goes to show how we must double check everything.

I steer clear of rawhide anyway but I bet this isn't the first case.... Makes u wonder how many dogs have ingested lead.

Are rawhide chews bad for dogs in general? But wow, that's horrible, thank god that person noticed it.

Yes, they are. They swell in the stomach, so if the dog swallows a large piece it can cause a fatal blockage.

Pizzles ( sick ) or stag bars are good.

kaztaz wrote:was just about to but this on here scary troy has the solid bones rawhide and once they get small they go in the bin

Tghe problem is, you never know if they've pulled off a large piece & swallowed it. They can't digest it & it swells - before you know it, it's an emergency dash to the vets with blockage & a major stomach operation.

That's a shame, Loki's gone off his StagBar since buying him a rawhide chew bone thing. He'll just have to geet back to it then.

We stoped giving Debo rawhide because one-it gave him loose poo and two-once he swallowed big piece of it. Likely he was fine but never again. Now he's in love with his stagbar and cow hoof sick

Based on advice from here when I first joined, I stopped the rawhide. The stagbar are the best things ever. What I do is, if Pixee stopped playing with them, which is rare, is play an hide and sneek game with them, she goes mad Laughing I will ever hide them under my butt, you should see her trying to get it.

And tripe, it does smell and makes me want to sick

OMG is rawhide really that bad??
i give Diesel raw hide on a very regular basis, like a good few every week, shes a big chewer and so thought it was better she had somat to chew instead of my furniture.......i never ever would have even thought they were bad for them?! Everything else she just chews right through and thought raw hide was safer for her than plastic.

She's gets nylabones which she likes but she goes off them and for some reason will only chew one end!

Fresh raw tripe doesn't have much of a smell - it's when you cook it that you really get the whiff!! sick

I have just been reading the posts re-Rawhide and am a bit concerned. I have been giving Zak Highlife rawhide chews for years and he loves them, always after his main meal thinking that it is good for keeping his teeth clean, he has a moan if he doesn't get one. I shall try stagbars now, but where do i get them and what are they, never heard of them.

If you buy on line make sure you get a XL , they aren't as big as you think

This is an XL bought online , think I paid about £12 , expensive but had it since July though Tommy does not spend every waking moment with it
