Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
Hi
Bruiser is doing toilet in the garden pretty much all the time now thanks to some great advice from the people on here =D>
HOWEVER he has started eating everything in the garden......... grass, mud, tree bark...... basically anything! ive checked we don't have any plants that are toxic, but i was wondering if him doing this is bad for him? he has been sick twice from eating grass/tree bark but it hasnt put him off!

Re: Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
Be careful. Mostly, it'll do him no harm, but.
Sometimes a dog will start to eat anything & as much as possible. If they eat too much greenstuff it can collect in their stomach (dogs can't digest it so it just 'sits' there) and cause bloat. I found out the hard way & one operation £ 500 vet fees later, Dempsey was back home feeling very sorry for himself.
Discourage it if you can. He's young yet, and exploring - he'll probably grow out of it, but just watch him & make sure he doesn't get carried away. Oh, and take care with ivy - some dogs can eat some & have very little side effects, others can eat it & it makes them very ill.

We do have ivy in our garden, but its up the fence so he has ignored it.......mostly he loves eating bark from the conifers! little bugger!we do try and snap him out of it, but he loves it and now even bring in what he has to show us! we just take it away and put it in the bin.......... i put a few toys in the garden to try and encourage him to play with them, but sofar hes still choosing the tree bark hahaha

Re: Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
Hollie does the same in my garden, but I only have planters, i've had to put the small ones on top of the garden table out of her way. She also brings twigs, leaves etc into the house, but hides them in her crate... Been out walking in the park today and she picked up a thick twig and carried it all the way round the park till it was time to go, had to take it off her cos she wanted to bring it home...little bugger x

Lola eats all and sundrie on walks. She's taken a great liking to what I think is rabbit poo, and she know's I'm about to tell her to stop eating it as she gets as much as possible before I can catch her. I was starting to think maybe she needs her intake of food increasing, so I did this, but no avail, she still seems to get everything. She even ran up to me the other with a strawberry.

Molly did this with cow and horse poo, she'd eat it as quickly as possible. She grew out of it, after being told "No" a few times, she now seems to ignore it, thankfully.

Re: Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
Dempsey went through a stage of stone eating. I seemed to forever have my fingers shoved down his throat to stop him swallowing them. Just keep an eye open & stop him when you can - he'll grow out of it!
Have you taught him the 'leave' command yet? Really useful, as well as the 'stay'.

Re: Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
Glad I did a search for garden in the forum and found that I am not alone.
Just got home to find yet another mess in the garden (yard over here). Last season before emma I had a heck of a time getting them to leave it alone and finally gave up. Silly me, thought I would try again. I have never had a place with a yard till now.
brand new baby pool chewed up
many flowers and shrubs torn to bits.
arm of chair chewed
Guess Emma is feeling pretty comfortable these days and Fritz is hitting that "im gonna mess up everything" stage
I polished emmy's nails and sure enough all the polish is gone from her digging up the plants. I knew it was her so busted haha
Is there any plants that aren't toxic and the dogs don't like to eat? maybe the stupidest question ever, but..... I found roses work, they leave those alone.

Re: Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
Bruno tries to everything in the garden, luckily we don't have plants or grass in the back garden, just a conifer tree that i think is coming out soon. but he does like to try a stone but not actually swallowed it as when he's got something i give him the look and he drops but in the last few days he found a hiding place for things, which i go and check out and take stuff away hee hee

Re: Eating EVERYTHING in the garden!
I had a "duh" moment yesterday. When I would plant something the dogs would dig it up everytime, driving me crazy. Well I realized that they were watching me bury "my bone" so to speak and the only way to know for sure was to dig it back up. Yesterday I kept them in the house while I planted and so far so good. Yay!
