nighttime potty
Hi everyone, we have a lovely baby girl called Jess, we got her from the dog rescue at 9 weeks, she was found on the street at 7 weeks old. we have had some digestive issues with her but she is doing well now and gaining weight very well, learning to walk on and off lead, recall and simple commands.
But what we really would like help with is, how long can a pup of her age (13-14 weeks) go through the night without a wee? we are crate training her and hubby is getting up once in the night to let her out for a wee, she always performs but he says it takes a while for her to get up and out of crate, probably too comfy and sleepy. If we didnt her up to her in the night we probably wouldnt hear her if she woke up as she isnt a barky dog and she sleeps in the dining room which is right under our bedroom (no room in bedroom for her crate as our room is quite small).
Here are some lovely pics of her, by the way do you think she is a full staffy as a lot of people say she looks like she is crossed with something else.... she is beautiful whatever she is. ****apologies if you dont see any pics i dont think it will work on my mac***

Re: nighttime potty
You may find an extra get up at the moment will help , you don't say but is it a problem through accidents or just learning the ropes ?

Re: nighttime potty
Loki's been able to go six hours no problem for quite some time now. I wake him up about 1 am to get him to go outside (I prefer this to him crying and me not hearing him). He used to take ages but now he knows the sooner he does it, the sooner he goes back to sleep. Anyway, every dog is different, so I don't know if six hours is normal for puppies to not need the toilet for, but either way, just wake up once in the middle of the night to let her out and then go back to bed if that's needed.

Re: nighttime potty
I would think about 6 hours is the best you can hope for at that age. They don't devolp full bladder control until about 6 months of age.

Re: nighttime potty
Till Debo was about 5mnths we took him out 10pm,then my OH was back from work around 1am,so another one and 7am. I knew DEbo can hold it long but didn't want to do any harm or stress the poor dog. Now it's 11pm and 7.30am.

Re: nighttime potty
Thanks everyone, we will keep doing the night-time toilet break, by coincidence hubby got her up around 2pm ish and then I heard her crying at 5pm and she went out again but I think it was a no. 2 rather than a pee (so at least she lets us know if we can hear her).

Re: nighttime potty
We have had Bacchus ( 9 weeks old ) for only 2 nights now and he went 6 hrs the first night and 7 hours last night. He's our first staffy and I think from reading other posts we have just been extremely lucky.
So not expecting it to last.
Have probably jinxed it now

Re: nighttime potty
We got our pup at 8 weeks, crate trained him right away, and for the first 3 weeks our schedule was:
- take him out at 10pm, then straight to bed for all of us
- wake up at 2-3am, take him out for a quick pee, then back to bed
- up at 5:30am for a walk/pee and start the day.
After a couple weeks of this, he started to refuse to get up - we would have to almost drag him out of his crate. We talked to our vet, and he suggested that if he doesn't want to go and if he's not whining or showing any discomfort, then just leave him. Ever since then, he's been going to bed around 9:30-10pm, and he sleeps until I wake up at 5:30 - no more middle of the night pees. We've had him over 5 weeks now and not once has he had an accident in his crate!

Love the snuggles he is giving you. Must be a staffy, thing our little boy ( 9 weeks and our first staffy ) does this too

Re: nighttime potty
well I think she will go through the night now, hubby got up at 1.30 to go to the loo and I said best leave pup till later thinking 3 ish but we both slept through till 6.30 and she didnt wake us up and was dry all night, so we will listen out in future rather than keep waking her to go the loo.
By the way, she is very stubborn and for last week her walking on lead and any training has gone out of window, she knows but just wont do it... can be that teenage bit yet as we think she is only about 14 weeks although cant be sure as she is a rescue pup.
One thing you can count on though is her snuggling up at night for her sleep!

Re: nighttime potty
Bit early for the teen "years," but stubborn is the way of the Staffie. You have to be stubborn back. Good advice to just listen. On a very rare occasion I have to take my 18 month old out in the middle of the night. He knows to ask me though. You'll get there. Keep up the training and don't give up! Beautiful pup btw.

My girl is 11 weeks old and I take her out at 10:30 and then its lights out.. She use to have a few early morning accidents, but for at least the last week she hasn't had and she usually wakes me around 6 to go out..
