Dempsey's at work again
Since the end of May I haven't had to take Demps to work with me cause of the kids' exam leave/summer hols. Now it's back to normal & he's been coming to work for a week & a half.
He's a strange dog - some people he ignores totally, doesn't even wake up; some people he comes out to see, tail wagging; some people he'll growl at & I have to shut his crate door. But kids..........oh, boy, he loves kids.
If a child comes into the office, Demps is out of his crate in a milisecond & he goes all quivery, with his tail wagging. I have to grab his collar because otherwise he does 360 degree spins & doesn't care who he bashes on the way round. But today, a young woman came in with a toddler, still in nappies - very young & into everything. Demps did his usual escape attempt & I grabbed his collar, but the little'un was very good & just touched Dempsey's head & shoulder.
All of a sudden, Dempsey turned, lowered his head & very gently but firmly pushed the little boy in the chest. Well, you know what toddlers are like, he just sat down on the floor. His mum was about to have a real go, and I was about to apologise when the child suddenly burst into absolute fits of laughter! He just couldn't stop. In the end, there were two adults & a child rolling around laughing & a Bull Terrier looking from one to the other as though to say "Ok, what? What I do? Let me into the joke!"

I know it shouldn't come into it but it does, you work for a church, which means you are a good person, I am pleased to hear that Demps has a good audience and all was well, sounds very cute

Awww bless him. What was the headbutt about, do you know? It's great that he's so good with children. I can handle a dog that is DA, or doesn't like some people, but not a dog that is aggressive with children.

Ahhh Dempsey, that is wonderful, what a big softie you are really. ><
That is a very good way to socialise him with other people.

I haven't a clue. But it wasn't a head butt exactly, more of a push with the front of his head - it was quite gentle really. Weird dog!
I agree with you, Shon, about aggression towards children. It frightens the life out of me. I don't know why Dempsey likes them, my two were grown up when we got him really & he's never been in close contact with kids. I think they confuse him in a way, he doesn't really understand what they are. Whenever we walk past kids, especially the younger ones, he stops & watches them, with his tail wagging furiously. If they look at him/talk to him/laugh at him he does a spin or two & then watches them again.
His big problem is his weight & the fact that he isn't at all gentle normally; he'll knock children over without meaning to hurt them & that scares parents. I can understand that.

Glad you can start taking him with you again. Suki is the same way with kids. She thinks she has an inherant right to say hello to every kid she sees and give them a big kiss.
