Male on Male dog agression
So if any of you know, my friend is going about trying to adopt a dog, well we found one
He is a nice brindle 4 year old male Staff. The only thing we worry for is that he is a he, and Romeo is a he. Romeo shows no signs of male dog agression in fact he couldnt care less, but we worry that if this other dog is dog agressive it might make things difficult. Have any of you delt with this kind of behaviour in a way that it was able to be managed or is our best bet to outfit the agressor with a muzzle when ever they are in the same area?

Mine are both male and aloooooooot of people told us not to get chance it will never work and well they are the absolute best of friends.
Neither of them are dog aggressive, and haven't taught each other any bad habits, only positive TBH
So yes it can easily work with 2 males

Re: Male on Male dog agression
because they will be living in sperate houses it will be easy i think mostly. it just me and Romeo spend alot of time at their home and vis versa.
When the new dog comes we thought it would be best to give him and his frenchie buddy a month or so to settle in before trying to get them to meet at the local dog park or somewhere netural.
I'm just thinking, since Romeo is so young and mostly submissive that i might be ok, but if its not and this dog is all about kill on sight... what we might need to do to have a 'peaceful pack'

I think most of us on here said don't do it!
See if you can take them both for a walk on neutral ground. Start off on lead with the dogs on the outside of you both. Then if they're ok, move one to the middle & then if that goes well walk them side by side, still on lead.
If the other dog's recall is good, you can then try letting them off the lead for a play, but watch their body language & step in if one seems to be uncomfortable or if the play gets a bit too rough.

Re: Male on Male dog agression
for any who wanna see. these are the french bulldog and the staff
the frenchie is called Onni (it means luck) and the staff is called Urpo (it kinda means moron...) his kennel name is Hardnose Jack in the Box.
I really do hope this all goes well and we can all be.. ehhr... doggie friend.
I think the walking idea is a good start for us. Its not sure if my friend is getting them yet, they will travel up north to go see them and talk more with the owner and such.
But wouldnt it be nice... a little pack of staffs and frenchies

Re: Male on Male dog agression
i feel pretty possitive since the frenchie is a male, and they both get along, bu8t they hve been raised together it might be different with Romeo who is a stranger

Re: Male on Male dog agression
but my further question is, if there is negitive behaviour... or fighting... what might we do to help the process of them getting along?
Re: Male on Male dog agression
If they were to fight and i mean properly fight best thing to do is separate them and introduce again on neutral ground.

Re: Male on Male dog agression
yes, that would be the best act in the immediate situation... but what about on the long term, i have never really had to worry about this before, and i notice alot of people with male agreesive males just avoid male dogs.
is there other things we could think about. i think that we should probally help establish a pecking order, being that Urpo is much older then romeo, Urpo should be at the top and romeo should be at the bottom... i guess that would mean that if they had to eat together feeding urpo first and making romeo wait...
but i'm just wondering all avalible options...
Opinions peeps?

Re: Male on Male dog agression
Well in our house Chance is alot older and yet harvey is most definitely top dog here.
Outside of the house Chance is a very dominant dog, with males and females but not with Harvey in the house

Re: Male on Male dog agression
i'm trying to google up some tips too.
some suggested keeping a pop open umbrella on hand if there looks to be a fight to stick between them. it gives a shock and cover...hmmm

Re: Male on Male dog agression
If the behaviour starts to get out of hand seperate them and have them both sit and be quiet and try again. Sometimes just being around each other will make them accepting and be sure to walk them together as much as possible.
