Sounds
I’ve just noticed that Ralph can identify the sound of the OH’s van pulling up outside the house – and knows it’s him.
When the van comes down the road, Ralph stops what he’s doing and listens... he then jumps up onto the arm of the sofa (so he’s high enough to see out the window) and looks. He then runs out into the hallway and waits for Danny to come in the door.
I thought it was a fluke – but he doesn’t bat an eyelid when any of the neighbours pull up in their car/van.
How cute.

Re: Sounds
There's no fooling them is there, they are very wise to timings too. When I was a kid I had a dog called Judy who was a stray, and she would wait by the gate until Dad came home from work. She would know exactly what time to go ouside for, amazing.

Re: Sounds
They've got a tremendous range of hearing & can tell the minutest differences in tone that we can't pick up! It clever, isn't it?

Re: Sounds
my first dog a jack russell terrrier apparently used to go upstairs at 3.30pm on a school day, jump up to the top bunk of my bedroom and gaze out of the window for me to come home from school.
Very clever dogs

Moo waits at the door if I get a text in the morning at 11 (days off), it means her nannys on her way to go out Gotta love them, but she also thinks any car to pull up outside with the engine is nanny and goes to get in lol!

Re: Sounds
Tilly and Tommy know when my car pulls up outside , and I know Tilly is in the garden as I can hear her headbutting the gate.
My Dad was a truck driver and our old BC could hear his truck from about 2 miles away as it was coming into town (he sometimes brought it home on a night or called by the house to give us a lift to school (yes in a truck with a 40' trailer ) and Roy would hear him , go mental at the door to get out and then stand with his paws on the wall outside and ears up waiting for him to arrive, never ever wrong

Re: Sounds
I think all my dogs have been able to identify particular cars - and are quick to learn when you buy another car, too.

Re: Sounds
Suki usually doesn't know we're back until we are at the door. We've got a Prius so it's real quiet.

Re: Sounds
Its awsome what dogs can do, my two know the sound of my car reversing but I can sneak up on them by driving forward onto the drive lol
