Eating the puppy pads
Hi, have just introduced myself and Percy in the new members section so hope it's ok to post here now
When Percy is in his crate overnight and the odd hour here and there to get him used to being left, we have half the crate with his bed and half with a pad down, during the night he will get up and pee on the pad and go back to sleep without waking us....for the last 3 nights he's discovered that he can rip up/eat his pad (not the bit covered in pee, just the dry bit) is there any good tips on preventing this?
Thanks in advance

Re: Eating the puppy pads
you could try spraying it with one of these concoctions from pets at home to stop chewing , it will give him the bad taste ??

Re: Eating the puppy pads
Do you leave any of his toys in the crate with him that he could chew instead of the pad ??

Try newspaper instead, it may get the same reaction but worth a try.

Re: Eating the puppy pads
My pup would do this too, ended up putting just newspaper down at night.
On occasion he'd rip it up, chew it etc, but newspaper has gonna be less harmful than a training pad !

Re: Eating the puppy pads
I don't use pads for exactly that reason! Dempsey wouldn't just chew it, he'd swallow it!

Re: Eating the puppy pads
Thanks everyone, yea pads are really helpful for collecting the pee, but not so good for tummy's I will give the newspaper a try tonight and see what happens x

Re: Eating the puppy pads
Throw the pads out, you are teaching him that it is ok to toilet in the crate, it is better to get up during the night to take him out to toilet. It won't be long before he will be able to go through the night. The owners who get up during the night get their pups toilet trained quicker usually.
Cyril was trained to either pads or paper, he is getting better but still thinks it is ok to wee in the house, the problem is he is a male and cocks his leg so would miss the pad or paper.

Re: Eating the puppy pads
He's completely trained during the day and it's not every night he wee's....he never uses the pad during the day to wee on, always goes to the door. So do you suggest to set an alarm to take him to the loo? As when he does go in the night he doesn't make a sound so havnt a clue what time it is he needs to go, he has a wee around 10:30 pm before we go to bed and he wakes around 7.30 am weve tried taking him out later ie 11.30/12.00 but hasn't made a difference x

Re: Eating the puppy pads
He is only tiny, his bladder won't be large enough to hold a lot for long. You can either restrict his fluid intake at night or ride earlier to let him out.

Re: Eating the puppy pads
Never restrict water from any animal, when water is available they learn to drink as much as possible to get them through the "Drought" periods, this leads to them weeing more not less.
Like human babies puppies internal organs are not developed enough to go through the night, we put nappies on our babies so they don't wet their beds. Nobody knows your dog better than you do so only you can work out what time to set the alarm. Once you have the timing right you can start to move the time you get up by 15 minutes later about once or twice a week until your pup is going through the night.
You think this is hard work, wait until he is about 6 months old when he becomes a teenage hooligan. >

Re: Eating the puppy pads
our girl also ate her puppy pads, that mess is unreal, so much dust and the worry of how much she ate, we stopped using them and set an alarm to get up in the night. didnt take long for her to hold through the night though and next time we get a new addition to the family we wont even start using the pads.
