Jabbas walk today
So i finished work early for once today so i took Jabba down to the oval where i normally take him. But today we walked around the to the other side & Jabba took of into the bush, next thing i heard chickens & ducks making a racket & i took off, by the time i got to him he had killed the rooster & the farmer (i didnt even know there was a farm there) was laying the boot in Jabba to stop him. Jabba sulked over to me knowing he was in trouble & laid down at my feet.
the farmer was pretty good about it, even said sorry for kicking him. The rooster got him a good scratch on the face which i have cleaned up.
I'm booked in for some more dog training but i'm not sure anything would of stopped him. he is normally pretty good for recall at the beach but there isnt any chickens out there.
I think Jabba just has real dislike for birds, he hunts every bird out of the yard & hates chooks (2nd one he has killed)

Re: Jabbas walk today
They do have a very high prey drive. Have you considered using a long lead if he will be going through an area where you know he might run off?

They work really well. Lets them run free and allows you to keep some control.

Oh no naughty Jabba. Its funny one of my dogs is fine with chooks and hates anything else small and furry and Tali is the complete opposite. She leaves alone small furries and tries to kill my little chickens.
I think perhaps some on-lead training working on getting him focused on you and start by working around one chicken in a cage or something gradually building up to walking him round a flock. Its one of those things that they need exposure to to help them get used to it. You need to work on containing that desire to chase and focusing it on something else, a treat, a toy. It won't have instant results but will improve his control and will be useful in so many situations.

Re: Jabbas walk today
I have Taz's re-call pretty summed up - but if she spots a bird - directing her attention elsewhere is a tricky job -
Ive had lots of baby birds in my garden this summer attracted by my plants, no amount of exposure to them calms her - fave toys, squeeekies, treats don't generally work - she's fixated on the things that flap and fly!

Re: Jabbas walk today
Work on getting Jabba to leave ducks chicks etc alone, it can be done. I have somehow got Pixee to leave the duckies alone when walking pass them. Ever feed them with her right next to me off lead. You should see peoples faces, so funny. I ever feed the duckies from my front door, and pixee just sits there watching and her nose going overtime
You are lucky that farmer was ok. They are allowed to shoot any dogs that harm their livestock.

Ohhh Jabba you naughty boy, good thing the farmer was OK about it. Rocky likes chicken too but prefers his cooked with a little stock and added to his kibble
Try using a long training lead to practise the recall further.
