Nipping!
I took Louie to a new training class last night and I mentioned the nipping and I was told to tap him on the nose and say no! We do say no and ignore him or put him in time out. Not sure about tapping him on the nose , do you think this is a good idea ?

Re: Nipping!
Agree with Dave, its not a good idea. It can promote being aggressive and send out the wrong messages.
U don't need to tap him on the nose, just correct, correct and correct. He'll get the idea eventually. Zeus used to nip so much, at times I thought it wouldnt stop, but when it gets too bad, just take him out of the room and leave him there for a few minutes. Keep doing it until he gets the idea, because he will in the end.

Re: Nipping!
Terrible idea. If you do this he can devolp a fear of people touching his head which could encourage him to bite.

No, very bad idea. If my trainer said that, I'd find another class!

Re: Nipping!
staffy owners need to be thick skinned, as ive said before they're a marmite dog - you either love them or hate them.

Re: Nipping!
When we got nipped or lunged at we'd immediately collect all her toys and food bowl and put them away (making sure she sees), and then ignore her for five minutes. The fear of taking her beloved food away in particular meant she got the message very quickly.
Not sure if it's because of this but when she's playing with another dog I've noticed she generally keeps her mouth closed and just her little tongue comes out to lick. Very sweet.
