Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
Hi,
We are now the pround owners of Jessie who is one of 9 pups who were born to Cookie who was rescued by the RSPCA. She is our first ever dog and despite lots of reading and advice from friends we are still concerned how to deal with her niping. We can see she is teething (11 weeks old) but she keeps grabing ankles and arms in a playfull way but we want to stop it. Can anyone give us a simple training method to stop this?

Re: Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
Hi and welcome from me and Lola!
I'm sure someone will be along with a link shortly, but if you look in the "behaviour and training" area there should be some good advice, and tried and tested methods. I think the general advice is to yelp when the pup nips, and then ignore it for a minute or two, the pup will then learn that nipping is not an acceptable form of play.
Hope this helps, have a look around, and as with all new members PICS OF THE PUPPY PLEEEEEEEEEASE!

Also be sure to have plenty of frozen treats or a frozen kong to help with the teething pain.

Re: Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
Hi and welcome. My pup is 10 weeks old and im covered in bite marks, we've tried the yelping but it tends to make her more excited. We tried the moving to another room but she tended to jump on the sofa and attack the cushions, we tried to ignore but she'd go and bite someone elses feet. Have lots of chew toys and kongs to no avail but will try the frozen carrots.
Good luck from me and tash

Re: Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
Thanks everyone! We have bought another teething toy which has helped slightly but she still tries to bite. We have also tried yelping which also helps but sometimes makes her excited too! We will soon try the frozen carrots and see if that helps!

Re: Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
Hi and welcome, she looks so much like my Callie
I agree with the advice you've seen above...ignore her when she bites and lavish attention on her when she plays nice...shove something else nice in her mouth (I am a big fan of antlers)...it takes a while, though (months) and you feel like you're getting nowhere. It really will sort itself out.

Re: Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
yep you have a real cutie , but be patient with the nipping , this is how they play / communicate in the litter and they are only young . Tommy is 17 weeks now and he is still nippy , but better and i mean much better than he was , we are all covered in little bite marks but he doesn't know any better so don't stress, stick with the advice / training offered and she will work out fine. A really tough little dog to bring into the world and through the puppy phase but you will never ever get the same kind of payback that you do with a Staffy, our 2 year old girl is now complete Angel

Re: Hello - new Staff owner seeking friends and help
Thanks for all the advice, giving everything a go. Jessie bit me really hard today, which upset me and left me wondering do I have a puppy who will turn into a vicious dog, I know it's early days and I'm expecting to much from her I think I just need reassurance from people who have had their dogs a lot longer than me.
