Surprised Are they too rough ?

Post by webber12 Wed Aug 08 2012, 00:01

Hello , well i got a new addition last week deano (8month old staffy male) and ive been seeing if he settles in ok with my bitch (almost 3yr old staffy bitch) and they have been playing alot around the house and outside it does look rough but neither show signs of discomfort via yelping etc so i let them be, but then i find little cuts and scratches over mainly my bitch around her neck area and stuff, no serious cuts but is this sort of play normal or are they being too rough ? maybe i just notice the scratches more because they are both white ? any help would be great thanks.

Mine play rough and get scrapes and such quite often. If it is a big one they stop. Just don't leave them unsupervised. Staffs just play rough. I notice more on my white ones as it is easier to see than on my red. I'd say it is totally normal! Congrats on Deano! I love having more than one!

Totally agree. Here is a link on body language to help you recognize if this are going too far.

My 2 drag each other around by their necks !!! They get a few scrapes but neither have had puncture wounds from teeth.
They play hard for sure and loud !
I'm always close by to calm them down if needs be but usually Diesel will let Tank know when playtime is over !

As long as neither is showing any sign of pain, and their scrapes are just superficial, I really wouldn't worry. As everyone has said, staffs play hard, that's just the way they are. They're having fun and getting to know each other. Your older female will let the pup know when enough is enough, don't worry, just enjoy them Smile

Mine is a bit different, i have a Boston bitch. Now my sbt head is chewed up. They snarl roll around growl stand up on each other. But it's the tone of their play I listen for. I usually give a low tone growl or a deep barking sound ANC they will end game immediately

My two ice and blue are a bit scrappy she is 1 and he is 10 weeks , she is like a mum and puts him in his place but sometimes he thinks he is the boss it gets a little noisy , I put my hand between them with a vocal comand of ah ah if they don't listen a firm strong comand of anoth with a pointed finger that normally stops them

I looked after a bull dog for a friend and at the end of two weeks both had little scabs on their cheeks and neck folds but at no time was there any aggression. I did however always supervise and stop when they got too much.
