Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
First topic message reminder :
Hello everyone, sorry i've not been on for ages. Been busy with Xmas..and of course..Logan!
Well he is now 6 1/2 months old and i took him to his 1st puppy class yesterday (we've only had him 5 weeks) and the trainer has got me extremely worried that Logan isn't walking properly. I have noticed it but thought he just had big front paws and needed to 'grow-up' a little bit. However, the trainer has said that he kick's his front paws up when he's walking and this isnt 'right'. I know she has a personal grievence with the breeder we got him from, but i am still extremely worried about Logan and his health. I was in tears last night! The trainer said 'that when you have a dog as bad as Logan you need to do something about it'. I dont think he is bad at walking and he has improved since we brought him home. I am taking to the Vets this aftenoon to get him checked out. (I did get him checked when i brought him home too for my own peace of mind that he was healthy and the vet confirmed this)
The trainer also started takling about legal action against the breeder. I told her to hang on as i need to get him checked out first. Being a 1st time Staffy owner i'd love to know if anyone has had problems with their puppies. The trainer mentioned Wobblers Syndrome too. I know this can affect larger dogs. I need some advice/reassurance please people! Logan is small for his age, but he's healthy, walks & runs, barks when he wants. Hes not mental all the time and the trainer did mention this might be a problem. How can it be a problem? Got him booked in at 1330 today so i can have him checked! Thanks in advance.

Don't think the worst yet. Have you spoken to Petplan, or are you just assuming that this is the case?

Hayley I don't know what to say. You must be devestated and I can't imagine the worry you are feeling.
Are your vets the only ones that know he was showing signs in the 2 week window? I f so is there anyway this may not be disclosed?
Until the initial tests are done and the results are back there is still nothing you can do and there is nothing set in stone yet that thats what it is. I can fully understand preparing for the worst, but try and say positive. Thinking of you all.

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Caryll, i spoke to Petplan. Not covered. (My hubby rang 1st as i was too upset and they said they couldnt speak to him as he wasnt a policyholder)
And i had a phone call from Croft Vets.
Logan has Hydrocephalus. (http://www.fordogssake.co.uk/shop/information.php?info_id=201)
He doesn't have any lumps or cysts in/on his spine but he does have a narrow spinal column leaving his brain. They have him on tablets and put him on a diuretic. He came around well from his anaesthetic.
They said they will need him back in a few weeks to see how he's doing and give him an MRI but need to discuss this tomorrow on collection as we have no money!
Janey, we asked the vet about non discloser but she just said its in her notes and there is nothing she could do! So gonna pay for tomorrows treatment but then i dont know after that! If its regular medication i can do that, just not a lump sum for treatment!!

Well fingers once again crossed for you. My vets lets you pay in installments so if does end up being one lump sum maybe it could be split?

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Reading that information site you quoted, it sounds like Logan doesn't have it really bad. It also says on there that some dogs 'grow out of it'.
I think that you need to sit down with your vet & have an in depth discussion about the Hydrocephalus and the costs. I think most vets will accept installments towards treatment, although they may ask for an administration fee, or interest.
It doesn't sound like there's all that much that they can do other than supply corticosteroids. He doesn't seem bad enough to warrant an operation. Let's face it, if someone hadn't said something to you in the first place, you'd probably never have taken him to the vets, and he'd probably have carried on as he is!

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Caryll, once again you balanced out my worrying by being all sensible! I made myself ill last night through worry. was throwing up and had a massive headache. went to bed at 7pm.
The fees are lower than estimated. its gonna cost me £1815 for the tests. And Logan is doing really well, hes eating and drinking everything he should so im just waiting for the phonecall to say i can pick up. Then its a 2 hour drive to collect him!!
I'll be asking loads of questions to the vet to and asking what the future holds for Logan.
Oh my baby dog! You have made me worry so!!

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Im so sorry, what a bugger about the insurance not covering him. Most vets do let you pay in installments though so in that respect you should be okay. Poor you and poor logan, though I doubt he knows what all the fuss is about!
At least he'll be back where he belongs by this afternoon, good luck Xx

We do worry about them, don't we? Although the condition in its extreme can be nasty, not all dogs are badly affected & most can be controlled with drugs. Asking around on the other 2 forums I post on, the GSD site says one of theirs had hydrocephalus and was treated with corticosteroids for a few months. Then the owner asked if they could be scaled down. the vet agreed to try it, and they gradually reduced them. The dog is now drug free & only occasionally shows a slight weakness in his back end. He's now 9 years old. The bully forum, there are 2 bullies on there with the same condition. One has just started treatment & the owner says the results are dramatic, but her dog was badly affected. The other is on minimum medication & is doing very well.
It's remarkable how animals & especially dogs cope with disabilities. They put us to shame!

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Aww lovey Ive not been on for a day been working, dont know much about dogs but have experience with people, by now youll know what hydrocephalus is and I dont think he has got it severe or else you would have seen it yourself by now his walking would be really bad like drunk all the time he would also be brain damaged if it were severe and hes not. The steroid tablets will boost his immune up there are loads of people out there living good quality lives and you would not know they suffer from it you just need to be carefull if he got a bad infection. So stay positive and we are all thinking of the little man

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Hey ladies. Thank u all so much for your kind words and support. Logan is home!!!! The appt to collect him was at 5pm but I turned up at 1545 just to see him. He has diruetic tablets to help get rid of the excess fluid and we have a check up in 4 weeks. Vet will see how he is and hopefully it won't be bad news.
He was sooooo hyper when I saw him and again when I got him home. He has a little bald head and bald front left leg! He seems a lot better and we had a lovely snuggle on the bean bag!
I wanted to bring him to bed but OH put his foot down. Logan is gonna get so many cuddles at work tomorra!! He is already back to jumping off the sofa and trying to headbutt us!
Hopefully the tablets will do there magic and he'll live a happy playful, bonechewing, mummy snuggling life!!!
Logan sends big licks! I'll post some pics of his little bald head tomorrow. X

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
He was howling and whining but we left him and he settled quite quickly. But then he was at it again at 0430! So i went to let him out for a piddle and he came upstairs and slept till 7am!
Everyone at work has already noticed a change in his behaviour. They all say he seems more alert and puppyish (if that makes sense)
Im just glad he's with me. Hopefully his Nylabones will arrive today so he can get his chops around those! He started 'staffying' last night (i call it staffying but really its just the staffy pant!) and i love it when he does, he looks happy when he does it!Gonna take him for a nice walk when i finish work today and then we'll probably have cuddles on the sofa until OH comes home and then they will play together until Logan or OH have had enough!
Hopefully going to take him to meet my nieces and nephew tomorrow for the 1st time too. That'll be fun! But they love dogs, especially puppies! And im sure Logan will lick them to death!
Im so impressed with how Logan has coped with this so far. Even the vet commented on what a lovely temperament he has! I think the vet was expecting to get a few nibbles, but my Logan knows bette than that and just licked him instead!!
I will kepp you all updated as and when i find out he's ok. and definatly after his next appt!!
Love and hugs, Hayley & Logan.
(P.S Be prepared for for lots of pics of him now!!)

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Yeah just wait and see now Janey! Got a checkup on Feb 24th to see how he's getting on, but im positive the vet will say he's doing fine. I can notice the difference already!
The only thing the vet said was that he might not ever be a big staff. Which i'm fine with, although i would like him to get a bit bigger hes still got a while left to grow!
so yeah, GO LOGAN!!!! (Thats my boy!)

Re: Is Logan walking properly?? Help!!!!!!
Logan had his vet check up today to see how he is doing walking/co-ordination etc after being on the tablets. The vet is more than happy with his progress and has decided to keep him on the tablets for another 3 months until he is about 1 year old and we'll see how he is then!
So happy for him!!!!! He's just puppying around at the mo, flying into the garden then diving straight on the sofa!!! Mucky pup = mucky sofa!!!

Hayley109 wrote:Logan had his vet check up today to see how he is doing walking/co-ordination etc after being on the tablets.
Fantastic news really pleased on the progress, we told ya not worry until you new, and puppying around, I find myself saying that all the time now lol

Think that why me and Blue get on so well, as we both have the mental age of 0 and for those who don't believe me, I have a certificate to prove it.
