I had a greyhound do that but that was a severe case of separation anxiety and he did it when we went out and left him to try to get out of the oom he was in.

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
Lola does this as well and I wondered myself why she does it, but she is teething at the moment, so to distract her I give her chicken gravy ice cubes and it works, she loves them.

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
I have heard in the past that chewing plaster out of the walls can be a sign of a calcium/magnesium deficiency thats why they want to eat the lime in the plaster.

Be careful of citrus fruits - they give the runs & vomiting! Only recently found that one out!
Bandit was an absolute devil for digging through plaster walls. We used Bitter Apple spray which worked well, but it doesn't last long & you have to keep re-applying it. In the end, thank goodness, he grew out of it!

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
Ihad the same with my eldest once ,we left her for about an hr in the hallway when me n missus went out and she'd chewed through the plasterboard into my bedroom and eaten skirting and doorframe .This instance was definately down to seperation anxiety, would,nt thinkthat your dog is trying to get lime out of plasterboard as there is none in it ,it contains gypsum which is a highly corrosive acidic chemical and VERY dangerous .Lime is very rarely used these days and is as dangerous as gypsum ,but is generally used on older buildings ,never on plasterboard ,if internal it would be applied on larves (which is timber straps fixed horizontally to timber studs ).I would say this is bordom as your dog is doing it while you are there and it needs occupying more . (Carpenter for 20 yrs ) hope this helps x

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
Good to know,
Well I remember learning about it in college (it was an animal nutrition course).
Perhaps the instructor was not referring to plasterboard maybe it was something else you can put in walls (sorry, very blonde female here have no idea about how you build a house!). Any ideas what she was on about Holsten?

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
Hello Nosipho,to be honest not quite sure what your instructor was on about ,plasterboard has changed so many times over the years its difficult to tell ,could be any type all dependent on age of house etc ,formulas for building materials change all the time ,so it could be that an older board had lime in ,but i have no knowledge of this ,i do know however that some had chrysotile asbestos in used widely until mid 80s ,and would'nt recommend anyone letting this practice carry on what so ever ,as i said im a carpenter and dont pretend to no all about the industry (anyone who does is full off it in my opinion),but i have a friend who is a plasterer and will make enquiries with him so i can shed some light on the situation x

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
Thanks, would just be interesting to know! Perhaps it was just certain kinds of bricks such as 'Bath stone' which we have a lot of round here. Does this contain lime as it's very chalky! Sorry to bombard you with questions

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
Right have been on gypsum website ,its not the board their after it could be the actual "skim coat" of plaster on top of plasterboard applied after ,all though the site says this COULD contain a trace amont of lime hydrate ,up to 4% in a bag ,which is a very small trace amont in a 25kg bag of plaster ,just shows how sensitive their noses are to pick that up then

Re: Chewing through plaster ??
I think most animals, just not humans, know what they naturally need nutrition-wise. Most animals will seek out an alternative, they dont mind if its man-made, if they are lacking in something.
Thanks for clearing that up for me!
