leaving dogs in front of shops
me again again - so a few weeks ago, Jelly was fine to be left in front of a shop for a few minutes, on her lead of course. The last couple of times though she has been shaking with fear at even the attempt. Luckily, some of the people I know at some of the shops have been happy to stroke her and reassure her while I run in. We keep her in site if we sit down for a coffee in a cafe, and people are always really nice to her as far as we have seen. She behaves too - until the last week.
Is there a way to teach this? Maybe sort of like "stay" but in public? I don't know why the switch flipped, but then, that happens with lots of stuff with puppies I think and may be just a phase. Is it even something we should be doing? I see dogs tied up all the time and lots of shops in my area even put out water bowls for dogs next to the tie up area, so we assume it's OK, generally.

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
I don't do it myself too scared she may be stolen, there may be the odd time when I pop in for cigs but she is always in eye shot and just sits there staring at me lol! So not much help.

Oooh! No! I would never leave Ralph. Someone tried to take my friend's boxer from outside her local shop. Terrible people out there.

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
I don't do it purely because others may leave their dogs and that wouldn't turn out very well.
As for your friends reassuring her - this is only going to make her believe the fear is worth it because she is getting petted and attention. I would ignore the behaviour, and keep it to only short stops at the shop.

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
thanks, yes, I have reservations about leaving her for exactly the reason that she might get stolen - there are areas where we live where I would never ever leave her, especially not out of my sight. There are one or two dog friendly stores that I could take her to, but otherwise, yeah, might just avoid doing this entirely seeing your initial responses. We live in a fairly trustworthy area, but there are places very nearby that have people who would snap her up in a heartbeat for fighting, and God knows what else

Better to be safe than sorry.
I once tied up my scrumpy outside a shop, popped in and went home! Got home without a dog. Poor little girl I forgot and left her there! After that never again. God only knows what could have happened. Stupid Jane!

OK I'm convinced! I'm sure I would be more than capable of doing something like that too

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
I haven't left a dog tied up outside a shop for, ooh, must be 30 odd years! I did it with the collies & the belgians, but the next dog was the GSD x Collie who didn't like people much. He was a big fella & could be a little fearsome!

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
I will occasionally leave Buster outside one shop but I can see him the whole time. I refuse to leavevhim somewhere I cannot see him, much to OH's disgust as he normally asks me to pop into a shop for something or other when I walk Buster and he always gets told no. In dog training I think they do teach an out of sight stay, well, they used to, I dont know if thats changed?

Jeeeezzzzz no way, would never do that far too risky. Not to mention the fact he could get stolen and then into God knows what, dont go there. What if another dog attacked whilst he was tied up, NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
i would be worried a kid would try to pet her, she would jump up and lick only, she's not a biter (at least not of kids) and the reaction of the yummy mummy might be let's say not the best. or heaven forbid she actually did do something very naughty. I don't like not being able to see her so I make sure I can at all times if I do tie her up outside, but I think I'm going to avoid it or have someone in my family stay with her if we do have to pop in somewhere and we all happen to be walking together.
Too many people around where I live, near Finsbury Park in particular, ask about where I got her and if I can get more pups... totally wouldn't leave her there. She would be gone in minutes, I'm sure. People stop us on the street or pull up in cars to ask about her. Really un-nerving.

i have no idea how to quote LOL but, i think its illegal to clip their ears in the uk (where i live) we didn't have him clipped.. although alot of people do it when they are like 7-14 weeks to avoid the tips of the ears splitting, Tyson didn't have any problems though

I've sorted the quotes out for you! Just click on "quote" and then on "reply to post" and it'll come up for you!
Yes, ear cropping is illegal in the UK. Clipping the tips of the ears doesn't stop the ears from splitting - I really can't think of any reason the ears would split anyway!

Hopefully that worked then haha, Oh right, because my partners friend had one and his ears began to split for some reason so i assumed this might be why they clipped them - Unfortinately our tyson had to be pts He would of loved his little brother vinnie!!

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
RIP Tyson, run free lad.
I have to admit that I've never heard of a dog's ears spontaneously splitting.

Re: leaving dogs in front of shops
Where I live we have a sort of main street with a small super market, fruit and veggie store, liquor store, paharmacy and numerous dog friendly coffee shops. Everyone knows eveeryone and there are security guards outside the larger places. If I need to pop in then I do leave Tyson with the security people in a down stay. He has been trained to do out of sight staying and it is useful. I do not however leave him unattended so to speak and I only leave him outside at the foodie places where he is not allowed due to health regulations.
