Long grass = rash!
Hi all
Well Lola's feet nibbling was no longer a problem and her rash had cleared up with her being on 1 steroid tablet a day.
We've been at mu mum & dads this week and they live by the woods and we took her & my folks collie for a walk and she's been in and out of long grass and of course she's back to nibbling her feet and her tummy is red raw & she's scratching her tummy!
The vet said to go back up to 2 tablets a day but she's still scratching.
I've been putting Sudocream on but its not helping much.
I've also given her a lukewarm flannel wash.
Any suggestions??

Re: Long grass = rash!
My old staffy used to have the same problem, I found keeping a bottle of witchhazel in the fridge very handy along with timing walk's when pollen count would be low, like early morning & late evening.
Apply it to a paper towel & rub it into her paw's and sore area's. she wont like the taste so wont lick her paw's hopefully & it will help to soothe the itchiness.
Do you use piriton?
Steroid's are not good for long term health but i am sure you know this already.

Re: Long grass = rash!
Ok i'll try the witchhazel
No, I know its not ideal long term but I got her down to 1 tablet a day and its just till the Autumn months.
My mum's just produced tea tree and witch hazel moisturizer?? Would that work??

Re: Long grass = rash!
I used only witchhazel, you should be able to find it in the pharmacy section at tesco my staffy used to like the taste of tea tree so it was a no go for me but it is worth a try, i first would check the bottle ingredients first though to make sure there is only tea tree & witchhazel you have.
I found avoiding grassy area's & wood's on walk's helped her a lot but the biggest difference came in diet, i put her on burns pork & potato along with a tin of mackrel in sunflower oil everyday helped her coat & skin.
Has your dog been allergy tested? it is expensive, I can recommend a good dog dermatologist if you need one but he is based on the south coast, he maybe able to advise you of somebody local to you though.
Send me a PM if you would like his contact details.

Re: Long grass = rash!
you could try calamine lotion..I presume you can get that over there..or something similar..it is a cooling , calming lotion for things like insect bites and sunburns for us humans.... I have used it on Winston and it helped him.

Good idea Vanessa, yes calamine lotion is available here, most Boots stores should stock it. I'm typing this as I scratch an insect bite
